Solved Wireless USB modems: security issues?

I'm about to go traveling with a Windows 7 laptop and a wireless USB modem, and realize I'd better ask:

Is it necessary to take steps to secure this wireless connection, or is that only an issue with wireless routers?

I read through:

... but it looks that applies to routers, only.

Any help will be appreciated, and I apologize in advance if I'm asking a pretty basic question. I'm new to web surfing without wires.

I'm not sure why you need to bring the modem with you? The modem doesn't add any security, the router has the firewall and dictates the type of wireless security being used so you don't need to bring the modem as most any network you might connect too already has one.

The security of the wireless connection depends on the type of security that is being used on which ever connection you are connecting too.

When ever you connect to an unknown network you are taking some chances so it's best to turn off all sharing options on your machine in the Advanced Sharing settings, usually unchecking network discovery and file and printer sharing will be enough, don't forget to do this in both the Work-Home and Public Advanced sharing windows.

In general Win 7 likes using WPA2-PSK security with AES encryption for wireless connections.

I used the term 'modem,' and I guess that dates me. Maybe I should have referred to it as a 'USB internet stick.'

It`s a 3G adapter so it is the same wherever you use it. As long as you have a firewall/antivirus/spyware suite on your laptop and it is up to date then you`re as safe as you can be. The dongle is just a way to get onto the cell/mobile phone network, like a mobile phone for your pc use to get on line. You have no control over that part of things. Comodo Internet Security, free for non comercial use, and common sense are your best defence.

Oh ok this is for 3G which is a bit different, that only allows you to connect to a 3G network with a prepaid plan, If you want to connect to a regular wireless network you would also need a USB wireless N adaptor so you can connect to other types of networks.
