Wireless using WEP requires Username/Password- WHY?

Hi all,

Long time XP user and I just starting using Windows 7 beta. I really like it so far. Except there's a few things I can't figure out.

I'm trying to connect to my own Wifi Network and it has WEP encryption (I know I should use WPA but for now, let's say i'm stuck with WEP), Windows 7 keeps prompting me for a user name, password after I already entire my WEP key. WHY??? XP never asked me for that. I tried the admin password for my router, didn't work. What is with this new "User name, password" requirement?

Please help. It's really fustrating. The only way around it is to manually add network. There must be something I'm doing something wrong. Thanks in advance for your help.

dsharky; Welcome to Windows Seven Forums! Nice to meet you! And yes, I have known a few days of that kind of frustration also.

My first guess would be you have "Password Protected Sharing" turned on. Look at this screenshot of the "Advanced Sharing Settings" and compare with yours?

Post back if this doesn't solve your password issue?

That won't work.

if the router has a set WEP key, you won't be able to connect.

The network password my colleague is referring to is for shares.
Has little to do with connecting to wireless.

If you wait for a few minutes I will show you where you can change the protocol to WEP.

Need to make some screenshots.

Edit: Lol, i see this thread was 7 hrs ago, but I will make the screenies anyway, just in case someone else checks in with the same problem

The easiest way IMO is to reset the router to its default settings, then go from their.... its like starting with a clean install of your OS...

Agreed. Setting it to WPA or WPA2 is best way to go, but maybe his router doesn't support it.

There is no WEP in Win7.

Or it must be the shared or 802.1x options?

Thank you squonksc, you have raised a good point!

I dug a little deeper into WPA and learned that WPA and WPA2 require a RADIUS server to implement, something a home network is not likely to have. That leaves WPA-PSK, or the improved WPA-PSK2 as a solution for a home wireless network. The PSK stands for "Pre Shared Key" and is sometimes referred to as WPA-Personal.

If the OP's router does not support WPA-PSK, he will need to inquire about a firmware update, or a replacement wireless router supporting the WPA-PSK standard. As WPA will soon become the required standard of all manufacturers, most current wireless cards no longer support WEP, it is not a Windows 7 issue, it is a current driver issue ie: not supporting the outdated WEP.

Hey all ! thanks for the replies. I'm not 100% sure if my router has WPA support, but it's just odd that Win7 doesn't support WEP. it's still pretty widely encryption still being used by a lot of legacy WIFI home networks.

I was the one that mentioned I'll show you, but I wrote a subsequent post that WEP is't there any more.

It could be on of the other two non-wpa options. (see my screenshot).

Sorry to bring this up again. it's been a while and i've been traveling too much. Anyways. I'm still having the same problem where trying to connect automatically to a WEP wireless prompts of oddly for a username/password even after i enter the WEP key.

Have you tried to manually setup your connection yet?

You go into the network sharring center
>Set-up an new....
>New Wireless connection
(im on my desktop so here is were memory kicks in)
>Manully connect to a network
>type in your SSID
>Someplace it should ask encryption type
>tell it whicher type your are using

Once again sorry about being vague its kinda hard when i cant walk through it, My laptop isnt accessible ATM

Windows 7 is not going to allow you to use WEP. You will have to use WPA-PSK, or WPA-PSK2:

I'm partial to WPA2-Personal myself. Since I don't have a RADIUS server at home, the -Enterprise options are out. I run a mixed wireless network at home with Win 7, XP, and occasionally my work Vista laptop. This is all through a Linksys WRT110 router.
