WLM Insert Pic causes excessive mail size

To keep this short, SkyDrive is not an option for our purpose nor is attaching files. They need to be embedded in the text. But inserting a picture increases the overall email filesize excessively. Attaching (not inserting) a 32k picture with nothing else causes the email to be 44k in size. If inserted, the email is 89k.

In our situation, we're inserting multiple pictures, interspersed within text. These email sizes become very large. That's a problem as some recipients are still on very slow dialup.

From my research I'm not sure but suspect WLM is both inserting the jpg in the text AND adding it to a slideshow. I'm not sure about that.

Can someone explain what is happening and how I can get this back to creating reasonably sized emails?

I've played with settings and googled and searched here until I'm blue in the face. I could use some help.

Thanks much.

I just did the same test you described with a 32KB jpg. Both emails were exactly the same size (45KB) checked in the sent items folder and 46KB in the inbox after beinng received. (I'm using WLM 2009 since I haven't upgraded to 2011 yet.)

Thank you for the reply. I have to wonder two things:
1) Did something change between the 2009 and 2011 version?
2) If not, is there a setting I may have set wrong?

I have encoding set to Western European (ISO) at the moment. I've tried Western European (Windows) and Unicode and had the same results with all three.

If it's a setting in WLM, I'm at a loss as to which one is causing the problem. We're creating the emails in Rich Text format and using the Insert ribbon and the Single Photo button for insertion, then browsing to the jpg to insert.

Now I'm wondering whether WLM is embedding photo edit info in the picture when inserted. I have selected No Borders and set every other setting I can find so that there is nothing other than the basic picture in the email and have then clicked the Set to Default button to make those settings the default. But I still see very little difference in the resulting email size even when I recreate the same email from scratch.

Are there any windows settings outside WLM that might be affecting the email size?

Thanks for all replies.
