Why is WmiPrvSE.exe using my CPU so much???

Just to be sure, right-click the process in Task Manager and click "Open File Location." Verify that the folder Windows opens is C:\WINDOWS\System32\Wbem

Yes it is in the wbem folder. I already ran a virus scan also...

Why is WmiPrvSE.exe using my CPU so much???

That's a host process container for a WMI "provider". As BCXtreme said, it's also sometimes a name adopted by malware attempting to masquerade as a legit part of the OS, so it's good to be a little bit suspicious, but if it's in the right location and the malware scanning says it's all good, then you're down to actual troubleshooting.

There are multiple WMI providers and the list will be different from machine to machine. Their job is to pump info regarding some aspect of the system's hardware or software into the WMI reporting subsystem. Hence, another way of looking at your problem is that one of the reporting interfaces is either struggling or doing more work than intended.

Does it happen in safe mode?

Is the behaviour intermittent or constant?

Note the PID (from Task Manager, add the "PID" column) of the wmiprvse.exe instance which appears to be eating your processor, then run this command from an elevated (run as admin) CMD prompt:

tasklist /M /fi "imagename eq wmiprvse.exe" > report.txt

If you upload the resultant "report.txt" and tell us the offending PID at the time, it may be possible to give you more targeted advice.

I have similar problem. The process WmiPrvSE.exe sometimes going to 50% or more CPU usage, but this is not continuous, this happens with even intervals, that seen in the attached image:

I would add that there is also svchost.exe (DcomLaunch) overloading CPU in same time with WmiPrvSE.exe. I think it's the same problem.

Congratulate me, my probem has been solved.

I have disabled all non-Microsoft services from msconfig, and now I hav no WmiPrvSE.exe running.

There are following services:
##Id_String1.6844...... etc## - Apple Computer, Inc.
Autorun CDROM Monitor - Unknown
FLEXnet Licensing Service - Macrovision Europe Ltd.
Nero BackItUp Scheduler 4.0 - Nero AG
RelevantKnowlege - TMRG, Inc.

I think my problem had to do with Windows Gadgets. I was running a couple gadgets that told me CPU and Memory usage and when I stopped using them and disables the gadget platform the CPU usage from WmiPrvSe stopped...

I have the same problem, this WmiPrvSE.exe runs at short (3second) intervals, uses only one core of C2D processor but maxes that core to 100% each time it runs.
I have the PID column in taskmanager active, showing PID 4588 "Network Service", I tried switching my wireless card off, but WmiPrvSE.exe still runs.

If you have an HP notebook this post might help resolve your issue...
I have an HP Pavilion dv6 Notebook PC
I found that by updating my HP Wireless Assistant to version 4.0.10 the high cpu usage from WmIPrvSE.exe ceased

How can you take it every day....

Guys what this manual things"Stop & Start" How can you take it every day....
Simple:
1) Go to administrative tools
2) Services
3) Click On "Status Colums"
4) Now Go down the list of "Started" ...Alphabitically ..to the "Windows..." maybe 5 to 15 services.
5) Stop one at a time. while checking the "Task Manager Cpu Usage"
6) You found the Problem...
ps. In my case it was the "Window Live Family..." ; It was fine; I added some extra restrictions on programs ...AND That Didit.
That How I Found out...As soon as I stopeed ...was normal...
THIS PROCEDURE WILL REMIND U OF SOMETHING U CHANGED RECENTLY...
