hi all. sometimes when i go to play music, or videos in wmp it will say "conecting..." in the top left corner if the window. when i try to play music or videos from there file location i get an error that says: "<file location> sever execution failed.". both of these problems seem to occur at random, and sometimes if i pause music or a video and go away from my computer, when i come back and press play, the media wont play. this is really annoying, and any help is greatly appreciated in advanced.

Hi and welcome

Are you sharing media from one machine to an other? or is the media on the same machine as WMP?

The WMP can be iffy at times. Maybe you want to run an sfc /scannow in elevated command prompt in case one of the WMP files is defunct. That might fix it.

Same Problem

Hi. I am having the exact same issue. I currently upgraded from Vista to 7. For the first couple of days I had no problem. Then all of a sudden I couldn't get any playback with music or video using any program. I have used CCCPI to determine if I have any codec packs installed and I have none. I have never had media problems when using Vista. The thing that doesn't make since to me is that very occasionally everything will work out fine and then in the middle of a song or video all of a sudden it will freeze up and windows says the program is not responding. I have tried everything from uninstalling WMP and trying other programs with no results. And I have tried uninstalling certain Windows updates with no results. This is a very Very annoying issue that has me very mad with Windows 7. Please help me

@RAHU: If the keyboard seemed to do the trick that one time, then perhaps this is an issue with the keyboard drivers? I'm not sure, really, but check the manufacturers website if you can maybe find updated drivers for the keyboard. Keyborads with media functions may collide with Windows' functions, I guess that's why all keyboards like that need those drivers... I'm really no expert, but still trying to help XD

@DJKnight23: If you don't have any codec packs installed, then this may just be the reason WMP fails to properly play files, or is not able to play them at all. I think Windows has some basic codecs for playing both audio and video, but you actually need codecs in order to play more file types in WMP like .aac (WMP supports m4a, but not aac), .ogg and when it comes to video .mkv .flv and more; as well as update the codecs the system already has.

I appreciate the response. I have since installed some codec packs and had no results. The main thing that tells me it's not a codec problem is the fact that everything will work fine every now and then. It's weird but it almost seems like it will work when it wants to and sometimes it doesn't work. For example last night, everything was going well, music played fine and so did videos. Now all of a sudden today it will not work at all. WMP will open up and show all of my music but when you select a song to play it will never open and eventually you have to use task manager to close the program because it freezes. I am so done with this issue, I hope some kind of fix will arise, otherwise I'm going to Ubuntu. Thanks and if anyone has anything or ideas, I do appreciate it!

Hey I just want to say that I just did a "special" install of Windows 7, which is an option for installation when you insert your Windows 7 upgrade cd. Instead of doing an upgrade, it basically does a clean install. I am currently having no more problems with my computer and honestly I would have to say that I am finally seeing my laptop run at the speed I knew it was capable of. I am very happy with Windows 7 and what it has done for my computer. I will post in a few weeks about how everything is going. Thanks everyone for all your help, and obviously I'm not going to have to dual boot with Ubuntu because when you finally get Windows 7 working like it is supposed to, you will want for nothing, atleast thats how I feel. Thanks!
