Wobbly screen

Hi,

am typing from a Win7 with a wobbly screen - as in 'trembly' monitor screen. The pc was renewed from an XP P4 to a Win 7 duoCore, new tower, monitor, the lot: the earlier setup also had a faintly wobbly screen. Is this then something to do with regional connectivity (West Country UK)? It's obviously not a pc problem. Perplexed

What do you mean by "wobbly"? Is the full on-screen image shaking, distorted, or is it partial?

And seeing as you new rig also has a new monitor, and the problem is persisting, you need to look at other sources of the problem.

1. Are there any cell towers in close proximity to you?
2. Any wireless communications technology, such as 2-way radios?
3. To you have any refrigerators or microwave ovens connected to the same circuit (i.e. the same breaker) as the one to which you PCs are connected?
4. Are there any industrial equipment, like electric welders and such nearby?
5. Is you power outlet delivering a clean stream of electricity?
6. Are you using a surge protector?

This is an intermittant thing, the screen sort of 'trembles' slightly now and then, most noticeably at the edge of the screen and on lettering.

No, a surge protector is not used, is this a good idea?

AS you ask if it might be a connectivity problem (which I doubt but) does this only happen when you are connected to the internet. If you have a Modem/Router switch it off to try without a connection!
I'm nearly as far west as you can get without getting wet and have no connectivity problems at all. Where are you exactly?

thanks - i used the term 'connectivity' in its broadest, loosest sense since i simply do not know what is causing the screen jitters

i think you're probably right - the internet is probably running when the screen starts trembling

I can't find your reply! You say it "probably" happens when the internet is connected but if you disconnect the internet connection you wil be able to say for sure. I was just trying to eliminate items!

I used to live near there - Military trying to power up that UFO they captured, again?

Buy a surge protector! Summer lightning can strike miles away and travel down lines zapping components. Even fridges/cooker etc can cause a problem.
Best protectors also even out the spikes.

the surge protector sounds like a good idea and i will investigate. Problem is the computer belongs to a friend so i don't want to interfere too much ~ but the wobbly screen is a real nuisance, and something a mystery [cue music]

Fitting as surge protector between the wall socket and the PC plug will not "interfere" with the PC in any way shape or form. It will merely protect the PSU from any potential damage!

y-e-s!!

these guys had had a P4 XP with a tiny 'Medion' monitor with a wobbly screen. Then they upgraded to a Core2 with super widescreen monitor and after a while, guess what? - wobbly screen

when i say wobbly it more like intermittantly very slightly trembling

total mystery - everybody thought it was the old pc / monitor - it's obviously not!

Do you have any problems with screen wobble on YOUR system? Is there any way that you could temporarily try your system at your friend's house (or try your friend's system at your house)?

has your set up got a graphics card or are the graphics supplied by onboard chips on the MOBO?
wobbly graphics are some times caused by a poorly seated graphics card or dirty contacts or possibly a failing graphics card (if one is present)

when you upgraded did you upgrade the power supply?
generally power supplies just meet the minimum requirments for an off the shelf PC adding higher spec components will draw more power and this could potentially be the cause if the problem is when the system is under duress.
