A few weeks ago I noticed my PC was offline (can't remember if it was BSOD or just off) and when I tried to start it up, the "moving glowing windows" logo during boot did not display the colored windows and it seemed to take a detour into immediate repair boot mode. However, it didn't find anything to replair. I tried this several (at least 15) times and only once did it mention that rdyboost.sys was corrupt. I don't use ready boost and never have...
I have tried replacing this file, I have tried running chkdsk. I have backup/imaged the disk in question, restoring it to another disk, and even tried using this disk to boot in an almost identical 2nd PC (both computers are HP Z600s). It does appear that there were some bad sectors on the disk at some point. Unfortunately, I'm at my wit's end and unable to get it booted into windows so I can do a repair install. I have access to the files when connected into another computer, but would really like to be able to boot this drive up to be able to retrieve config and other files off it before I completely wipe and start over. For example, I have several outlook accounts and the like I want to retrieve.
Tonight, I booted from the DVD (windows ultimate 32bit retail) and went into repair mode and ran sfc /scannow and it's full of errors (lots of update errors???). Would really appreciate any insight into what to do next. Would love to be able to simply do a repair install to replace the broken windows files but apparently this can only be done from within a working system now (what the heck, microsoft?)
