If you would have downloaded and burned the ISO for Partition Wizard, and then booted to that CD when the drive was still internal to the machine and not external, you could have done everything you needed to do... including deleting all partitions on the drive if you wanted to.
I still don't think it would have been necessary to vaporize the extended partition and two logical partitions inside of it, but you could definitely have deleted the primary partition and made the now unallocated space available to Win7 for its install by just deleting that primary partition while booted to the standalone Partition Wizard CD.
