Did you perform a "clean" install or an upgrade.

I think you can pick and choose files from the backup to restore them

If you recall any of the names of the programs, just perform a search

What kind of "restore" are you trying to do which would restore files after reinstalling Windows 7?

Where did you save them to? Have you browsed there to see if they are there?

A "restore" is a system restore which is invalid here, or an "image" restore which would only reimage your HDD with a saved backup image of your HDD.

What other restore are you referring to?

I did a backup onto a portable HDD, which is there. I double click on the restore file and all the programs are there, and when i try and "restore" them i get errors. I will post the errors tomorrow, im probably doing something stupid. Also, i believe you can restore them from the "windows old" file? How do i do that?

Browse to the folders you want to import from the windows.old folder, select the files and drag into the folders where you want to put them using the explorer tree on the left side of the window.

For example, you can go to your old Vista Documents file, show all the files, Select All using top left dropdown menu, then drag the group over to the Documents library showing on the left side of the window. Same with all other files. Use their library listings at the top or browse to them starting with Computer.

Thanks for your reply. Does that work with programs too? Will they then be installed or will I need to find the install file and reinstall them? I had Adobe Elements, photoshop etc but they were pre installed on my vaio, and i would like them back!

No unless you do an in-place upgrade, you need to reinstall all of your programs.

Do not attempt to run them or copy them from windows.old.

You need the installer for each, as it makes multiple entries into the registry which will be fresh in your clean install.
