I recently installed office 07 on my wifes new pc fresh with a brand new copy of windows 7 pro. The problem is whenever she downloads a word file and tries to open it outside of word she gets the following error message.

There was a problem sending the command to the program.

The only way she can get word to open any documents is to first open up word 07 and then click file, open.

Anyone have any ideas? I have gone through the complete uninstall/reinstall steps already with no luck. Any help would be appreciated... its driving her crazy!

You could try right clicking on the file and selecting open with. This should default to Microsoft word, but if this is not the case you have the option to browse to the word.exe program to set the association properly

You may need to make sure the file is associated with the program. You could also try repairing the Office install.

Does this occur with any specific files types?

The files are associated with word... it happens with any docx documents. For instance she had to download a word document from her college course website. She downloaded the file in firefox. The file showed up in her download window as a word document... she clicks it and gets the "do you want this program to make changes to your computer (microsoft word) she clicks yes and word opens up but doesn't open the document.... a popup window comes up saying "there was a problem sending the command to the program"

We need to determine if Windows can self-correct this problem.

Confirm - Did you right click the offending file(type) and choose Open With... and navigate to MS Word?

Yes or No will suffice.

Yes.. i did. still having the problem

p.s. Thanks for the quick replies.

I encounter a similar problem caused by running multiple versions of Office and multiple apps that can process Word files. Your best bet is to go to Control Panel and uninstall Office.

You will be presented with the option to Repir Install. Allow it to finish. Test. Report.

Do not tell us that you do not have the install media. That indicates a different problem.

One other thing has just presented itself - your wife is downloading from the web using Firefox - when you right click on these files do you see a button "unblock" ?

This is a protective device between windows 7 & Firefox, to protect against potentially unsafe files. If you see this click on the button to remove this extra protection as I may stop them being loaded

Have the exact same issue

Windows 7 Professional, running office 2003. If I click a document I get the same "there was a problem sending the command to the program" error. Word will still open but not load the document.

This happens with any document, most of which were created on the same PC when it was running XP and office before I wiped the machine and installed Win 7.

MS Word 2007: There was a problem sending the command

My first post so apologies in case of wrong submission.
I had the same problem opening docs in Word '07 using Windows 7 Home Premium. Thanks to this page, I solved it by going to the Office Button in Word, clicking on Word Options, clicking on the Save tab and changing the default file location from C:\Users\my user name\Documents to D:\ which is where all my documents are kept. After that everything was fine. I did the same with Excel.

Repeated Error Message / Can't Open Word Files

Having the same issue: I can open Word files from within word but not from the web, or off of my desktop, or even from Window's Explorer.

This issue started up today after a Windows Update that happened over night (and a subsequent reboot).

I've tried all that was mentioned here to no avail. Please keep throwing options out at me. Help!

Success! Undo those checkboxes on compatibility tab!

Hey folks,

I've been plagued with this same issue for days now and followed up on this sage advice (found in a different post)

FYI, I'm running Microsoft Office 2007 on Windows 7 64-bit.

Click on start menu
Click on "all programs"
Click on "Microsoft Office" folder
Right Click on "Microsoft Word" (if it's Word that's giving you grief)
Select "Properties"
On the "Compatibility" tab

Uncheck "run in compatibility mode", and
Uncheck "run as administrator"

Somehow these boxes get checked, perhaps during the Windows update process.

Whatever the case, I'm in the clear (at least until the next Microsoft compatibility issue).

Hope that works for some of you,

-Cliff

Goto start or Windows logo(for VISTA+ versions), find MS Word 2007, Right click and go to Compatibility tab, at the bottom you'll see Privilege Level and in that you'll see an option that has an Admin Icon next to it. it reads Change settings for all users.
this will open a new window, and at the bottom you'll see this check mark by an option that reads "Run this program as an administrator", uncheck it and you're good to go.

p.s it worked like a beauty for me thans to another user at another forum (JYD19)

Hmmmm. I've having the exact same issue. I'm running Win 7 Pro and Office 2K7. I've followed the suggestions here but nothing is checked on the Word 2K7 Compatibility tab?? Tis a puzzlement. I guess I'll try the uninstall and repair deal and /or keep searching.

We have had the 'problem sending command ... message' with Word 2003 on Windows 7 Home Premium (64bit).

The problem has gone away (so far!) simply by unchecking 'run as admin' having already unchecked 'run in compatibility mode'.

this is a great relief because the cost of upgrading to 2007 professional is significant (assuming that would fix the problem) and because we have wasted a lot of time trying to make work something that worked fine under XP and even on Windows 7 for our first few days.

I finally solved it after reading a post over on MSDN describing a registry hack:

CANNOT Open Files From Outside The Apps - 'There was a problem sending the command to the program.'

>>>>>>>>>>excerpt follows<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<

The Command key, on my system, is this:
"C:\Program Files\Microsoft Visual Studio 9.0\Common7\IDE\devenv.exe" /dde

Since I was less sure of myself in this case than I had been in the case of .XML files, I tried a quick experiment, I changed that one line to the following:

"C:\Program Files\Microsoft Visual Studio 9.0\Common7\IDE\devenv.exe" "%1"

After making that change, I could open Visual C++ files by double-clicking them in Windows Explorer. However, I was still unable to open C# files. I believe I have to make a similar change for each file extension.

It appears to me that the DDE system is not working correctly in Windows Vista and later, and that the Visual Studio Installer has not yet been updated to the new requirements. That's only a guess.

PS: Or maybe it is more likely that Visual Studio no longer handles DDE. Seems unlikely that DDE would be removed from the O/S outright.

>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>end of excerpt<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<

They were describing a problem with VS2K10. I found the equivalent entry in the registry for winword.exe, hacked it, and the problem is history. Hope it works for you.

solution

Most probably you installed a printer driver which generate a conflict with office (some HP and Cannon models).
The solution is to go in Control panel and to set the default printer, the windows virtual printer "Microsoft XPS Document writer".
After this you will not face this problem anymore, but you will have to select printer each time you want to print a word document.

Good luck!
