Hi,
Word 2010 (Professional Plus 2010) was working fine without any issues until yesterday when all of a sudden it stopped launching. I hadn't even restarted or just turned on the computer. Right in the middle of a login session Word 2010 started this weird behavior. I did a repair and a complete re-install also but to no avail. All other office applications seem to be working fine.

Here's a list of what I've noticed of the problem.

1. If I double-click on a word document, nothing happens. When I check the task manager there is an instance of WINWORD.exe consuming about 2000K of memory. This is true for both doc & docx files. This doesn't always happen. It's kind of inconsistent. It does launch about 5% of the time I'd say. I've check the default associations and both doc and docx are set to launch with Word 2010.

2. If I right-click on a document and choose Open With--> 2010, same problem as above. If I right-click, choose Open With, and then do a Choose default program and pick Word 2010, the program launches. Again this is not totally consistent. The program launches about 90% of the time. 10% of the cases the WINWORD.exe with 2000K memory occurs and there is no launch.

3. Word will not launch even with the Run command winword.exe. Same issue as symptom 1 above.

4. Word will not launch even if I navigate through Start Menu and go to the Office folder.

5. Word always opens if I launch it in Safe mode through the Run Command - "winword.exe /safe". Interestingly, if I put a backslash instead of a forward, "winword.exe \safe" Word launches (most of the time), but with an error message saying that no safe.doc file was found. (Obviously since I haven't created any such file)

6. Once I manage to get Word open, then the File-->Open always works to open documents.

This is what I've noticed so far. Will update if I find anything else.

Thanks for any help.

Hi Neutron16.
Couldn't find anything in the eventviewer at the Office launch moments.
I seem to have a constant error that states:
Failed extract of third-party root list from auto update cab at: <http://www.download.windowsupdate.com/msdownload/update/v3/static/trustedr/en/authrootstl.cab> with error: A required certificate is not within its validity period when verifying against the current system clock or the timestamp in the signed file.
But that doesnt seem related to the Office issue..
