Word Deleting Spaces After Save

Since I installed Windows 7 (Home Premium Edition) my Word 2010 program is deleting random spaces when I save a document. This happens whether I am in 2010 mode or 97-2003 compatibility mode. It's been happening on all my documents for over two months and I can't find a way to stop it. Any ideas?

Does it happen in Word's Safe mode?

winword /safe

Also, are you saying that was not the case two months ago? Have you installed something (hardware-printer or software-extra spellchecker) that could cause that?

I have not run Word in safe mode. I'll try that but I don't think it's Word that's the problem. It started happening right after I upgraded Windows to 7. And no, I didn't install anything in between the install and the beginning of the problem.

Win Safe Mode

I couldn't get into safe mode following your directions (if I followed them correctly).

I pressed the Windows key (with the Windows flag on it) plus the R key. I got a popup asking for the folder to open. I entered winword/safe and pressed return. I then got a message saying it couldn't find the file named winword/safe

I'm wondering if this problem could have anything to do with the document View that you're in when you have your Word doc open. For example, you might be viewing the document in "Full Screen Reading" view, but your default Save View may be the "Print Layout" view. That could account for your saved version not looking exactly like the version viewed on your screen. I would suggest you check your default MS Office settings to see if something has changed.

If you wrote it to Run dialog (Win key + R) as here in your post, then it's because you've made a typo: it's not winword/safe, it's winword /safe as Neutron showed you. Notice the space between winword and /.

Windows 7 Word Space Deletions

First of all, thanks to Neutron 16, Imperfect 1 and Kari for your suggestions. Here are my responses.

First, I was missing the space in the winword safe instruction. Now that I can get into it, I'm not certain what this does for me. I believe the suggestion meant I should be running Word in safe mode to see if the problem persists. I'll do that. But if this solves the problem, do i need to always run in safe mode? And what am I missing or disabling if I do so?

Second, the suggestion about View settings is interesting. When the problem started, I was working in Page View (as I always do), creating the file as a docx document with Word 97-2003 compatability and saving in the Windows 2010 docx format. As I found the "space" problem persisted, I switched to saving in the Windows 97-2003 doc mode and working in that mode and I still have the problem and wondering if there's a mismatch between modes that's causing this.

I can't find anywhere to determine which "View" I'm saving in, so I can't answer that question you posed. I've checked the Word options menus and can't find anyplace to select a default View.

I'm going to try working the safe mode for a while today and determine whether this has an effect on the issue. Thanks again and I'll get back to you.

Look at your Status Bar at the bottom of the screen on any Word doc. There are several View icons displayed toward the right-side of the bar, just to the left of the Zoom bar. If you don't have the different Views visible, you can right-click on the Status Bar to select the specific options available.

I think you misunderstood my reply. I know what view I'm working in. I always work in page layout view. However, you suggested checking my "default Save View". Unless you mean "what view am I in when I save the document?", I can't find anyplace in Word that allows me to define a "default" Save View. If you could tell me where that default setting is, I'll go check it.

Thanks for the clarification, I did misunderstand your reply.

Two questions:
1. When you reopen your Word doc does it reopen in the View you were originally working in, or does it reopen in a different View?
2. If it reopens in a different View, are you saying that when you change back to the View that you were originally working in, the spaces are still missing?

This may actually be a 'settings' problem --- if so, you just have to find the right settings! Have you explored your Layout Options, where you might find a setting that corrects what you're trying to accomplish. To access Layout Options, click the Microsoft button, Word Options, select Advanced, and at very bottom of page open the Layout Options tree, where you will find a long list of additional options.
