Solved Word Doc Not Staying Saved!

Hi,

I'm using Office 10. This is such an odd thing:

I have many Word docs and they are all ok (at least I HOPE they are!)

But one is behaving as though it is being closed without being saved.

The first time it happened yesterday I obviously thought I'd stupidly not saved it, but after spending another hour updating it a second time, I made sure I did save it every few minutes.

Then when I opened it again today, it was the exact same version I opened yesterday, and it says it was last updated on July 2nd! (I've been adding to it every day this week!)

As it happens, this doc is a list, so I copied the whole thing into Notepad and updated it there.

My biggest concern is that it will happen again to a more important document, such as an essay or article, where I won't necessarily notice the content is different straight away.

Anyone heard of this happening before?

Or how to stop it happening again?

To be upfront, this is a problem that I have never experienced or heard of. Using my knowledge of computers, I can come up with several reasons for the problem
Insufficient or defective memory
Insufficient of damaged hard drive sapce

Make sure that you have sufficient available memory. Right click on bottom task bar, bring up task manager and go to performance to check out memory avaialble for use.
Take memtest86. Run for 8 passes and check each slot with a known good stick for 5 passes.

Make sure that you have sufficient hard drive space
Make sure that your hard drive is not failing.

I agree with Rich : this isn't a common occurence, not that I have heard of anyway.

Just to check : was this document originally created with Word2010?

I have seen this happen when the link to a document is from a backup and not the original.

Does this problem happen when you do a "Save as" rather than just a "Save"?

For the time being, until you get this problem sorted out, to prevent losing any important files, why don't you go into your MS Word Options, Advanced, go to the Save section, and check: "Always create backup copy."

Thanks Roban, opening a backup instead of the original looks the most likely culprit, thanks.

I have been opening my work by Right Clicking on the Word icon and selecting docs from a list of Recent Docs.

I do make regular backups onto two different hard drives, and I always pick one random recent doc to open to check the backup has worked.

So it makes sense that I could have opened a backup version and it has added itself to the recent docs list on Right Click, (though I don't remember seeing two with the same name in the list, which is what usually happens).

Sadly, I was unaware of this yesterday when I last did a backup, so if this IS what happened, the C drive would have been saved OVER the F drive, meaning the OLD version saved over the new version.

This is good news though, as it means there is most likely a logical explanation and not something wrong with Word.

I just checked and it is saving now (touch wood), so yeah, probably human error.


Also thanks Imperfect1, I did not know you could do save a backup. (it did it while Saving. I did not "save as").
