I'd had just gotten a brand new harddrive for my laptop and once I brought all my old documents from word over to the new harddrive from my USB drive and then reinstalled Microsoft Office Home & Student 2007 and I try to open a document up an error message pops up saying "C:/Users/Sean/Documents/____/___.doc is not a valid Win32 application". Is there a way to get rid of this or bypass this and get my document to work again? Any help would be very grateful and I would appreciate it.

I am having a similar problem. My computer won't open up word documents. It tells me that "This file does not have a program associated with it for performing this action. Please install a program or, if one is already installed, create an association in the Default Programs Control Panel.
The problem is obvious, my computer does not have the .docx extension associated with Word 2010 documents.
I have attempted to find the program for association, but I could not find it. I even checked the link the shortcut I use to open up word points to, but it does not work.

Following Profdlp's suggestion, here is what comes up:
.doc=Word.Document.8

Help?

Althought these two issues are different, you can both try this:

Go to the Office Button in top left corner.
Go to the Word Options at the bottom of list next to Exit Word
In Word Options go to Resources.
Run the Word Diagnostics

This is a good first step in seeing if Windows can fix the association. there is also a Update button in that Resources Tab and a Activate Word button that might also help.

See if what Thorsen suggested works. :)

I actually have a similar problem with Publisher 2010. I have some old .pub files from Office 2000 that won't open if I double-click the file. If I run Publisher 2010 and then go to "Open" they run just fine.

For the file association, you can do this to see if you can change the default file association:

Type "File Associations" into SearchBar

Click on "Change a file type associated with a file extension"

the "Set Associations" window will appear.

Scroll Down through the file types till you find the file extension you want to edit

Click on "Change Program" if it is not already assigned to the correct Program

A window will appear with Recommended Programs. If you don't see the one you need, click on the "Browse" Button

After changes are made, click on the OK button.

This is where my problem arises. I cannot find Word 2010 in any directory, at all.

it should be here:

C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office12\WINWORD.EXE
............................................ ^^^ this will probably be a diff folder.

you can also do a search for the file winword.exe

that should be where Word is...

Good advice. That "WIN"Word used to confuse the dickens out of me when I was looking for just plain old "Word".

Just in case, Office 2010 will be under Office14. Also, it could be in the Program Files (x86) folder if you are not using the 64-Bit version.

(I feel guilty nitpicking such a good answer.) :)

Sorry, it was late when I posted that last night. If it's not too late, go to Control Panel and look for office in the Programs area. If you go to uninstall it there should be a "repair" option. :)

If that doesn't work, then try the reinstall.

Open a command prompt and type in:

assoc .doc

Then see what it tells you. :)

(Note that there is a space between assoc and .doc)

could u give me a step by step on how to do it. All I know is how to get the command prompt up. What do I do afterwards and so on?
Step One: Find Command Prompt on your Start Menu, right-click it and Run As Administrator

Step Two: type in:

assoc .doc

and hit Enter on the keyboard

Step 3: Write down what it says and post back.

Ok, it says this now:

Microsoft Windows (Version 6.1.7600)
