Solved Work Network Possible on Win7 Home Premium 64bit

I am using a Work Network on my computers (4 total) with a shared printer.

Can I use Windows 7 Home Premium 64 bit and set up a work network?

If not, do I have to use Professional or Ultimate versions?

I don't use/need any of the extra functions that Professional or Ultimate versions offer.

The network is used to share/transfer files to other machines and for sharing a single printer.

Any advice would be appreciated.

Define or explain what you mean by "work network"? If you are not connecting to a Domain any version of Windows 7 should be OK. I don't believe Home Premium can join a Domain, you would need Pro, Ultimate or Enterprise for that.

I'm afraid you need Professional, Ultimate or Enterprise to join a domain.

However, you can create and join a Homegroup with Home Premium.

During installation, does Home Premium have the "Work Network" option?

yes it does, you should have no trouble setting up a 'work' type network.

i've got home premium on my netbook, and it 'works' fine.

I believe you have those options on any version of windows 7. It effects sharing and firewall settings. Is there any particular reason why you picked work over home?

I am a noob when it comes to networks. I had my computer literate nephew come and set it up for me. "If it ain't broke, don't touch it".

i always use 'work', as i don't want/need homegroups. not sure why really, i just use old-fashioned sharing.

Usually a Work or company network has a Domain controller that you log into with tight controls on what you can and cannot do, for security etc. A Home network usually uses a simple Workgroup setup for simplicity. I wasn't sure from what you said which one you were using. Even though you have set your network type to Work, you are just using a Workgroup setup so Home premium should be fine. I always use Home here at home. For the longest while I had an XP PC on my network and went old school. No Homegroup and manual file and print sharing. Now that the XP PC is gone I've switched tracks and setup a Homegroup. To be honest I was thinking it was going to be more trouble than it was worth but it actually worked quit well once I got it all setup the way I wanted.
So if you set your network type to Work there is no Homegroup? If thats true thats a nice little tidbit of info to file away for future use.

yep!

yep, confirmed it for myself. Its still there, its just disabled/turned off. When I switched back to Home it was fully functional again and no settings were lost.
