Working Intel 630 graphics driver for Comet/Coffee/Amber/Whiskey lake

Posting this here for Badwolf after the spineless pussy faggots at winraid destroyed this post. Thanks to Deathbringer who made this modded driver.

My first mod for 15.45.33.5164 with support for Comet Lake, Coffee Lake, Amber Lake & Whiskey Lake in


Windows 7, 8.1 and 10 (up to 1607):

1. Download official driver - https://downloadmirror.intel.com/29972/a08/win64_15.45.33.5164.zip

2. Unpack and replace two files with modified versions - files to replace for UHD630 Win7 driver

3. Boot in with disabled driver signature enforcement or enable test mode.

4. Install driver as usual: by exe-file or Device Manager.

5. Choose “Install this driver software anyway” when Windows ask.

6. Reboot in normal mode.

Adding a couple of notes for myself, because I will have a sleep tonight and probably forget what I have done tomorrow.


Moved files to Graphics folder inside driver package. Saved to NAS.
Copy driver package from NAS to Proxmox Win 7 virtual machine (or regular install if I was ever to do that).

Open Command Prompt as Administrator (All Programs >>> Accessories. Right click 'Command Prompt' the left click 'Run as adminstrator')
or type 'cmd' in the searchbox and do the same as above, as long as you open a terminal window.

type 'bcdedit /set TESTSIGNING ON' (without '') press enter, you should get a message letting you know the opperation completed successfully

Close terminal window and restart to get into Test Signing Mode. Upon restarting you should see 'Test Mode Windows 7 Build 7601' in the bottom right corner.

If this is a clean build and you haven't modified the folder view yet, good time to do it now so you can see all the files including hidden ones.
Open Windows Explorer >>> Organize >>> Folder and search options >>> View. Make the necessary changes. Apply to all folders.

Not seeing something like setup.exe only igxpin.exe which doesn't look like a regular install file, so going to install via Device Manager.

Type 'Device Manager' in the search box.

Right click on 'Standard VGA Graphics Adaptor' >>> Update Driver Software... >>> Browse my computer for driver software >>> Let me pick... >>> Have Disk >>> Browse

All going well I should now be looking at autorun.inf which looks like a proper place to launch a driver, so press 'Open' and then 'OK'

BUGGER!!! The folder you specified doesn't contain a compatable software driver... ...X64-based systems.

Let's have a look and see if there is anything else in other folders... OK navigated to Graphics folder, selected 'igdlh64.inf and hit 'Open' then 'Ok'

Seeing a list of drivers, that is more like it, select 'Intel(R) UHD Graphics 630' and select 'Next'. Quickly read message and promptly ignore it. Click 'Yes'

Another nag message, just continue on. Finished installing...

Windows encountered a problem installing...

The driver selected Intel(R) UHD Graphics 630

... not supported for this version of Windows.

VMs use your host's video driver so there's no point using a VM to test it out. The driver will be a virtualized generic one.

igxpin.exe is the setup file, you double click that.

I have been trying to install Windows 7 on the machine I was running Proxmox server on, but had no joy after a day of trying. I looked up the specs of the ROG Strix B460-F Gaming motherboard and it only supports Windows 10. So I am guessing either Intel or Microsoft are crippling the Windows 7 installation.

I can get as far as the options part of the install and the Tab, arrows and enter keys wont work, but Alt, Ctrl, Delete does. I have never heard of a keyboard partially working before, so it has to be something in the BIOS that is telling it not to install. I have tried installing off a USB stick, using Ventoy and a DVD drive and all three are doing the same thing.

I have another system here that is slightly older but I was hoping to try and get the driver working on the machine that I want to run the Windows 7 in the VM. That way I could say for definite that the VM was the cause of the driver not working, but without being able to install Windows 7 on the bare metal I can't say conclusively.

Better yet, make a bootUSB of Paragon disk manager, copy your Win7 OS partition from a working computer into your modern one and use the OS adjuster to integrate the OS onto the new hardware.

No I haven't given up yet. I tired a number of different installation methods before I worked out they were all having the same issue of no keyboard and mouse, which made me realize that issue is either Microsoft or Intel are trying to cripple the installation.

I started to install Windows 10 using Ventoy, and it was going to let me do it, but I would rather eat dirt than install Windows 10.

Last night I came across something called Windows 7 Image Updater which appears to update your ISO file with additional drivers / updates. It is not a quick process as I have been trying to create an updated ISO for hours now and it is still running.

In Proxmox you can pass the real GPU through to a VM but you lose use of it for the hypervisor layer. That is why I have been trying to get the driver to work on bare metal first. If I can't get it to work properly on bare metal there is little chance I will ever get it to work in a VM.

Worst case scenario is that I have to run just Windows by itself, and build another PC for the Proxmox.

Yes, the Image updater is what integrates modern drivers into the ISO. The way I got Win7 installed on my modern hardware is I cloned from the old SSD onto the new one and used Paragon from a liveUSB to adjust the OS to the new hardware. No installation needed and I kept all my files/settings.

We're all gonna have to eventually upgrade to Win10 or a linux distro, because even if the hardware works, more and more software is dropping support for Win7. There are hacks to cripple the telemetry.

Success! Took over a day of trying to create an updated image with my crap laptop that crashed after 8 hours to create an image that finally worked (took two goes).

But finally booted with a mouse (didn't check keyboard) did an install and plenty of drivers weren't installed, but I wasn't worried since I am only trying to get the video going.

Glad I left myself some instructions because I had already forgotten half of what I had done... So following on from my previous instructions...

This time I used the igxpin.exe which launched an Intel driver setup screen. No problems during install and had to confirm that I wanted to install an unsigned driver.

Opened CMD in Admin mode.
bcdedit /set TESTSIGNING OFF
Restart

Happy days now showing a UHD 630 driver, and better yet no issues reported.

SketchUp installed and opened without saying it had no video acceleration and it opens a large sketch.

So proof of concept is complete I have the UHD 630 driver installed an running on Windows 7 with a I5-10400 CPU.

Now time to wipe this install off and put Proxmox back on this machine. But before I do that I might try stick this ISO image on the Ventoy USB stick and see if it will install from it.

No issue booting the updated / modified Windows 7 image from Ventoy, so no need to keep a separate USB stick just for Windows 7.
