World of Warcraft on the taksbar

I love the new taskbar in Win 7, and I have all my most used programs on it as well as WoW - when I open up an instance of Firefox or Word, the icon on the taskbar is just highlighted, and if I open up more instances of the same program, I can see the instances layered behind the icon. However for WoW, it adds a new icon to the taskbar instead of just highlighting the icon already there.

Any thoughts on this?

It could be like the Battlefield games where the icon launches one program but then calls to a second one, closing the first app. The only way to find out my little theory is to open task manager and watch it as you open the icon on your task bar, you would have to make sure you open WoW in windowed mode so you can see the task manager the whole time.

You would be 100% correct. Launcher.exe calls wow.exe...

If you don't want multiple icons, open your WoW folder and pin wow.exe to the taskbar.

The worst that will happen by not running launcher is not getting the "news" and auto-updates. If you connect, and it complains that you need a new version, you can always run Launcher.exe manually...

I am curious as to why you need multiple copies running (unless you do database development for private servers like I do :) ) -- hmm -- or you could be be multi-boxing I guess...

Thanks for the replies.

However the problem is not solved :( Its not Launcher.exe I have pinned, its wow.exe, which is the program that runs in the taskmanager.

When I run it, it calls launcher.exe which then closes and wow.exe is running.

I dont need multiple instances of wow, I would just like to have only 1 wow icon on the taskbar, like the otehr programs I run :)

Launcher.exe is how you receive updates and news for the game. It also runs a scan to make sure you are not using any cheats and/or have any malware on your computer. Blizzard states you should always start with launcher.exe for security reasons. Another thing is that Wow uses a program called Warden to monitor your computer, which probably starts with launcher.exe.
