Experts predict the world will run out of internet addresses in less than a year, the Sydney Morning Herald reported Monday.

The internet protocol used by the majority of web users, IPv4, provides for about four billion IP addresses -- the unique 32-digit number used to identify each computer, website or internet-connected device.

There are currently only 232 million IP addresses left -- enough for about 340 days -- thanks to the explosion in smartphones and other web-enabled devices.

Exactly why the IPv6 protocol is required which is 128 bit and supports 2128 (about 3.4×1038) addresses. While the older standard 32 bit IPv4 provides an addressing capability of about 4 billion addresses (232).

This is one of the reasons IPv6 is being used for Homegroup networking, it's just a practice lap for the IPv6 protocol.

If it's not in 340 days...Doesn't matter, i curious to swap to IPv6 and mean internet is moving on forward as so manies back in 2001 predicted the end of internet.

Even though it no longer appears in this thread, from the email notification that I received, it appears that you were so offended by my post, that you must have reported it. I fail to understand why you resented it, because it was not directed specifically to you, even though your post was quoted. The quote was to simply keep my remark in context...nothing more.

I didn't report it. I think I started that whole thing. and I apologize. If any of those posts should have been reported, it should have been my first post. I instigated that conversation and hijacked the thread. I posted in the "Today" thread an apology to all the mods/admin/forum members.

Really that whole thing was a bad move on my part and I took your post the wrong way. What you said makes sense in retrospect and I hope that report doesn't affect your involvement with the forum. I have always seen good stuff from you and never any issues. I am sorry for taking that the wrong way.

No kidding. Hmm... I smell Y2K fears. Besides, as one respondent stated, IPv6 is supposed to open up a whole new world of URL's. Maybe they want us to donate our own? LOL! There's always a doom-sayer every cycle. :sarc:
