World's first 256GB flash drive

Kingston has unveiled the "world's first" 256GB flash drive - but it will cost you more than £650 ($1,000) to get your hands on it.



The 70.7 x 16.9 x 22mm device raises flash drive storage to the kind of capacity you normally associate with laptop hard disks.

Kingston claims the drive is "ideal for netbook users who want to extend the limited capacity of their machines", although given the device costs about twice as much as a netbook, buyers could probably get more storage by purchasing two of the cheap ultra-portables.

Once you see the 64gb models followed by the 32gb you kind of figure it won't take too much longer to start seeing 128gb models and now a 256gb already!

I wonder if that will come in both flavors of 7 on it by chance?! :roflmao:

I saw 32gb and 64gb models listed for around $500- depending on the type of features they offer. Some include a button you use to backup files from a hard drive.

Good idea, but priced too high.

If you used it as suggested, it would be cheaper and easier to buy a 750 gig notebook hdd and pay Geek Squad to install it. You would still save like $100!
($150 for the HDD and $850 to have Geek Squad install it LOL. You can tell I hate them).

Lol, at first i was like who the heck needs geek squad?! We're all geeks here!
Especially when it's something simple like a HDD (at least it was for me, took like 5 minutes on my lappy) but then i realized it was a carefully placed geek squad bash

Edit: On topic: There is no way I'd pay that for a flash drive. But it's good to see the technology coming along

I have seen 32GB flash USB devices (technically they are not drives) for less than $300.00 US smackers. I own one.

I should say those are under $300 when you can easily get a 64gb at newegg for about half that amount! Even at a retail office supply store's online store you can find a few 32gb models for under $200 as well.

i wonder how many chips its using and how many parallel writes it has to do to get such a speed.. (i am also guessing its one board,which means alot)
id keep it in a safe (or box most likely) but with a hole just to fit a pretty long usb cable
