I could get windows 7 for the $30 student discount

I know that my pc is getting fairly old now (6 years ), its an athlon 2800+ currently have 512 mb ram, but im upgrading that to 1.25 anyways, my graphics card is integrated and pretty pathetic so i don't expect aero or anything. XP has had a lot of neglect and is sluggish and i figure a fresh start would be good for the computer. would 7 perform okay and would it be worth my while to upgrade?

I agree, I think windows 7 will run; but as still as you start packing other apps on, you may run into difficulties.

Some advice...
- Check the windows 7 upgrade advisor here Download details: Windows 7 Upgrade Advisor
- Look at the manufacturer websites for your hardware to ensure that it is win7 compatible.

Good luck!

I ran the upgrade adviser and the problems were the ram and the video card. At such a low price i thought it would be worth looking into, I had seen some people on here running it on below min specs pretty decently

I think you should try it. At that price - what can you loose. Win7 will definitely be faster than your neglected XP. The problem with your graphics is the aero - but so what. That's just eye candy. But you should definitely put the extra RAM in.

I would not buy it even at that cheap price. You are not going to have many more years with that computer. When you buy your new one, it will have Windows 7 installed or possibly even a Windows 8. Enjoy the computer that you have. It is very possible that you may even have a problem installing the new OS. Many here with newer computers have experienced problems, such as endless reboot, freezes, bsod. Why get involved with these potential problems for just a short term use?

Welcome to seven forums kkyyllee: Unfortunately your motherboard uses the Nforce 2 chipset. Which will not support windows seven. Sorry for the bad news. Fabe Motherboard Specifications, HP Pavilion a320n Desktop PC - Product Specifications - c00039102 - HP Business Support Center

Should that not have come up in the Update Advisor? I have seen Win7s run on much older PCs. I suspect that when that webpage you refer to was made, they had no clue of Windows7.

"Should that not have come up in the Update Advisor?" - Not necessarily, Microsoft doesn't know every piece of hardware out there. That is why it is recommended to check the manufacturers websites directly for updates. The upgrade advisor is not the be-all-end-all, it, 'like us' :P ..... is simply advice.

By the way: I too have seen Win7 run on older machines; sometimes successfully, sometimes with extreme difficulty.
Advanced users - feel free to give it a go.
Newbies - strap your learning hats on... just in case. :)

Not so, pulling up a webpage that was written in the 90's proves nothing. What did they know back then about Windows7.

Who cares when whatever was written? You're saying the Win7 supports Nforce 2 chipset? Hmmm, it doesn't even support Nforce 4...

Maybe, maybe not... There's a lot of hardware out there that we expect MS to test. Yet in your case Nvidia has made it clear what Win7 support they were offering.

I don't discourage you from taking a run at if you chose, just be sure you've backup all important data prior to going for it!
