WRT54G v2 will not change/renew IP address..

I have a Linksys WRT54G v2 & latest OEM firmware.

A few days ago I tried to release & renew my IP address to get a new one .. for sh!ts & giggles. It did not change, and just thought the Comcast modem was remembering the IP .. and just went about my normal web surfing.

At about 17:20 PDT today, nothing would connect to the internet. My WRT54Gs status was fine & had the same IP it had a few days ago .. and I tried to release & renew the IP again, nothing changed. I called Comcast tech, and the automated thing reset the modem .. still no internet, still same IP address. I released the IP & unplugged the router for about 5 mins .. renewed & got the same IP again. I released again, and reset to factory defaults .. same IP again.

I called Comcast tech again, and spoke to a real tech, told him what I did .. and we both suggested to try connecting directly to the modem and see if I works .. and it did!

I had another D-Link DI-624 Rev C v2.70 .. released the IP, and hooked it up .. everything works fine. So for S&Gs I released and hooked up the WRT54G to see if the IP changed at all .. nope same IP!!!

Has anyone encountered this, or can think of something else to fix it? I would like to use the Linksys again, as the D-Link sometimes got funky under heavy load.

Oh wow you have one of those hackable routers.... Might be that the firmware might be too old to communicate. Did you ever try using the Linux based DD WRT Firmware for that router?

If you go here and put in your router... you can put in firmware that will make this router work to its optimum potential... not saying that it will work but it is worth a try.

This is only a guess and not saying it will fix it but at least its a test and miss or a test and hit. It could narrow it down to the software on your router.

months ago, I tried one of those 3rd party FWs .. configuring it was a pain in the ass .. not user friendly GUI at all.

How about downgrading the firmware to the next lowest edition of the Linksys OEM

edit: I just checked dd-wrt .. adn the GUI looks alot better then when I tried it .. maybe a year ago .. Cosmic Cocktail or summat version?

edit 2: it was openwrt .. Kamikaze something. This dd-wrt looks ALOT better, gona try that

man .. so many different versions/variations .. not sure which one to get. Not to mention many different of the same to load via different ways.

Yeah there are alot. I think you also have another choice. It is called Tomato.

That firmware is good becuase it has OpenVPN if you live outside the states. My friend is in japan. He got the firmware but hes not all that saavy on vpn settings.

Just make sure you check the right router version. I think it is real picky on that.

I got the latest/recommended dd-wrt installed .. but even after that the WRT54Gs IP is still the same as it's always been. I'll just be using my D-Link from now on I guess .. too bad, I was kinda hoping to see what this dd-wrt does.

I guess I am worried about nothing .. Speedtest.net - The Global Broadband Speed Test remembers my IP from early Oct 2010 when we got Comcast .. and it was the same as it is now.

I remember when we had Verizon/Frontier DSL .. I could release and renew the IP in seconds.
