x box controller

hi there i recently got darksiders and noticed it works with a x box controller and receiver ive got both so hooked them up loaded the game went to the options and there was my controller started the game when it says press b i tryed and nothing happens but when you press start the game pauses and the big x in the middle of the conroller tells me its connected pulling my hair out help please scampy x
