Xbox 360 to laptop connection problems

Hi, for the past year or so, I've been connecting my Xbox 360 to my laptop using ICS in order to use Xbox Live. The setup looks like this:

Xbox--->ethernet cable--->laptop--->wireless--->router--->modem

I've been using this setup for about a year, without any problems. However, yesterday, while the Xbox was connected to Xbox Live, my electricity unexpectedly cut out, and returned shortly. When I tried to reconnect, I wasn't able to access Xbox live.

I'm running Windows 7, and in the 'Network Connections' page of the Control Panel, the Local Area Connection, which is the Xbox, remains on 'Identifying' for an extended period of time, and then eventually settles on 'Unidentified Network'. I tried resetting the network settings on the Xbox to factory default, to no avail. I've tried resetting my router, also with no luck, and I've tried disabling and enabling my main connection while ensuring it was 'shared', again with no results. I can bridge my main wireless connection and the Local Area Connection, but it results in an unplayable, poor Xbox Live connection.


Any help would be greatly appreciated.

What are you IPv4 settings on your laptop NIC card?

Click on the Windows Orb, type network, find and click on "Network and Sharing Center". Click on "Change adapter settings". Right click on your local area network connection, select properties. Click on Internet Protocol Version 4 (TCP/IPv4), then click on properties.

Do you have "Obtain an IP address automatically" selected, or "Use the following IP address" selected? Post all of the information listed on that screen.

yep, I know how to do it, like I said, I've been using this method for quite a while now.

As for the IPv4, 'Obtain an IP address automatically' and 'Obtain DNS Server automatically' are both checked. And in the Alternate Configuration tab, 'Automatic Private IP address' is checked.

If you get an unidentified network, the culprit is usually related to the built in DHCP server in Windows 7 not being able to connect to the other device. Once that happens, it can be a huge pain in the butt to get Windows to connect correctly. The easiest thing to try is to uninstall the ethernet NIC, then scan for hardware changes and let Windows reinstall it. Give that a shot and see if it helps.
