Xmarks Authentication popup window

In the past two days a tremendously annoying popup window has started showing up about every minute and a half. It is labeled "Xmarks Authentication" and it asks for a username and a password. I don't have any idea where it came from. I have run a McAfee scan with no result, and have searched the hard drive for "Xmarks*" and found nothing.

Any help getting rid of this nuisance would be much appreciated.

Have you installed any new software recently? You may have become a victim of Malware. Download and install MalwareBytes and immediately perform a full system scan.

Not sure if this is your issue. Are you running FireFox? There is an Xmarks bookmark syncing service addon that may be causing the issue. They recently shut down their servers: Xmarks Shutting Down Syncing Services at the End of 2010 - Tested

If you are running Firefox, you could use Tools/Addons to uninstall it. You could also check Addons in IE and check in Control Panel\Programs and Features.

This is your Xmarks for IE application (it runs in your tray)

The best thing to do is to simply login to your Xmarks account!

If you want to stop running the application you can right click in the tray area of your browser and then find the blue X from xmarks and right click and shutdown or remove the Xmarks for IE program from the Windows control panel -> Add Remove software.

Thanks to all that have replied. As Orbital Shark suggested I dl'd and am running (even as we type) the Malware program; so far it reports 6 objects infected - but it is still running.

This just in: the malware program finished and reports 14 incidents of malicious software on this system (what the dickens is McAfee doing for me?). I will let that program remove these and see if that solves the problem

James: I do have Firefox installed on this machine but mostly use Chrome. I will, however, do the checks you - and Joelastpass - have suggested.

Thanks again to those who responded. Kudos to Orbital Shark as his link to a malware removal program seems to have done the trick. Everybody's help was\is much appreciated.

I know what it is... It's an add on to google chrome, it's a back up place to store & recover your book marks if you ever need to... I just downloaded it from the google's chrome web store... it's popping up on me as well & I am not sure what to do next with it... will ask my son tomorrow... he'll know

sorry to make the bold message but ive searched through the top and bottom of google and found no answer to this, this is the first post i found and i figured out the answer on how to get rid of it on chrome (it may work for others)

so basically what i did was open up my computer, the rot of your windows drive (normally c)
in the search box i just typed [xmarks], and i waited for the search to finish

then right click the xmarks icon picture that shows up (if it doesnt that click any of the icons) and click properties, look under location or target, note you wont be able to see it all unless you try to select it (as if you were gunna copy and paste it)


you will see its located in appdata/local/google...blahblah and eventually it will get to a folder called extensions, in the extensions folder you have all of your extensions but they are definatley not named properly, this is what that properties windows is for, use the properties window to find out which folder in the extensions folder holds the image, it will be one with random letters, mine was one of the first 3, and NOW DELETE THE FOLDER, yes the folder with a name of random numbers + letters , the one that is INSIDE the extensions folder,

idk how but it came up 3 more times, then stopped, it hasnt come up since and its been an hour

XMarks Browser Addon

You loaded an addon to your browser called XMarks. Its purpose is to backup your bookmarks. In my case, I added it to Google Chrome. My issue was that I hadnt yet created an account.
There are two options, delete the addon or log into your account.

1) If you want to delete the addon:
a) There may be an icon on the upper right of your browser which looks like a white X (or butterfly) with a blue box surrounding it.
Right Click and select Remove from Chrome.
b) If there is no icon there, in the upper right, the last item on the right, there are three horrizontal lines, which when pointed to say "Customize and Control Google Chrome".
Click on this, select Settings.
When the new tab in Chrome opens, on the left side select Extensions.
Scroll down until you see XMarks. There are two options here, disable or delete.

2) If you want to use this extension, you must log in:
a) If you have forgotten your password.
Go to Xmarks | Bookmark Sync and Search and select login along the top menu items.
Enter your email and click Forgot your Password.
b) If you don't have an account set up yet, the same screen has an option listed to Signup. Once you have signed up, when the popup comes up, sign in. It won't pop up anymore.
