XP and Win 7

Okay, I'm wondering. When I start XP Mode, it tells me that I need an anti-virse Program. I have one installed in Win 7, why didn't it pick it up. With this reason, is the reason why I have to know that if I'm in XP Mode, and I need a file from the Win 7, is it possible?

Hi there
Essentially running a Virtual Machine is just like a physically different real machine.
The only difference is that you are running on "Virtual" or "emulated" hardware -- not 100% totally correct but near enough.

So treat your XP machine as if it were a totally DIFFERENT machine to your W7 host.

I normally do install MSE in a virtual machine, unless, for some reason, I have all access cut to that VM. That's very rare for me, and since MSE is free, I just pop that on. I'm not too familiar with XP Mode, but I thought you could access files on the host in several ways...by mapping a network drive/share to the host, dragging and dropping from desktop to desktop, or having the VM use the hosts drive as a connected drive in the VM.

Why not just use MSE? It's free, lighter than Norton, and out-performs it.

MSE is Microsoft Security Essentials. If you haven't heard about it, do yourself a favor and read up on it!

Memory usage isn't the only indicator of performance. I have 8 GB....do you think I notice a 30 MB difference? You don't even notice a difference on a system with 1 GB of memory. CPU time, length of scans, CPU usage during the scans...plenty to consider.

It is definitely true. AV-comparatives.org always ranks MSE at or near the top.

I use MSE on all my virtual machines. Together with the Undo Disk feature, it's really effective.

Undo disk is a feature in Virtual PC that allows you to discard all changes on your virtual hard disk. For instance, if you suspect you have got an infection, or something else went wrong with your XP Mode, you can discard all changes (applications installed, settings changed and so on).

Here's how to enable undo disk:

• Go to XP Mode settings
• Click Undo Disks on the left pane
• Choose Enable Undo Disks, click OK to apply changes

After that, whenever you suspect something, you just close the XP Mode choosing Turn off and discard changes:



By default, when closing XP Mode it hibernates without asking you if you want to hibernate or shut down. To be able to change Undo Disks settings, the XP Mode must be really shut down, you can not change this setting when it's running or hibernated.

To enable close dialog, go to XP Mode settings. Choose Close on the left pane, choose Prompt for action on the right pane and click OK to apply changes:



Now run XP Mode once again and click close button on top right corner. This shows the close action dialog. Choose Shut down, wait XP Mode to shut completely down, and change the Undo Disks settings.
