Solved xp and win7 on separate drives - system restore points deletion?

Hello, new user here!

I've been looking at the tutorial "System Restore Points - Stop XP Dual Boot Delete"

Does the deletion of restore points described there also occur when xp and win7 have been separately installed on two different physical drives (with the xp drive disconnected when 7 was installed)?

Is it still an issue today, and does it apply to 7 64-bit home edition?

Hello Jonesy, and welcome to Seven Forums.

Unfortunately, this issue is still being reported by people. You could test and see if your Windows 7 restore points get deleted whenever you startup XP. If so, you could use the tutorial you linked to stop it.

The issue happens when XP is able to see the Windows 7 partition or drive, and/or system protection is turned on for both the XP and Windows 7 drives/partitions in the same OS.

Okay, so the problems also applies to two completely independant and separately installed OS'es on different physical drives then? Fair enough. I was hoping that maybe "dual boot" referred only to systems where the new OS had been installed while the old OS was connected, so that they share a boot sector or whatever it's called, and had an automatic dual boot screen on each startup.

You're not saying the problem could be prevented by turning of XP's system protection, are you? (I'm pretty sure you're not, I just want to be certain.)

Am I right in assuming that the problem only relates to existing restore points, and not future ones? I mean, if I only boot into XP once, and then only use 7 for the next three months, then at that time, 7 should have 3 months worth of working restore points, right?

Finally: Does booting into win7 with the xp drive visible also delete the xp's restore points?

Yep, it doesn't matter if XP and Windows 7 were installed on the same drive on different partitions, or installed on two separate drives.

No. You just don't want to have system protection turned on for both the XP and Windows 7 drive in the same OS.

In XP, only have system protection turned on for the XP drive, and not for the Windows 7 drive.

Somewhat. Any existing restore points for both OS's get deleted whenever you startup into the other OS. Otherwise the restore points will be available until you startup in the other OS.

No. You would only need to hide the Windows 7 drive from being seen by XP to stop this. XP is not affected if Windows 7 is able to see the XP drive.

Somewhat. Any existing restore points for both OS's get deleted whenever you startup into the other OS. Otherwise the restore points will be available until you startup in the other OS.

You say I'm only somewhat right, so I'm not sure I understand you correctly. What I'm asking is if the problem not only deletes restore points that have already been made, but also somehow destroys Windows 7's ability to make new restore points in the future.

XP is not affected if Windows 7 is able to see the XP drive.

Sorry, yes, Windows 7 will still be able to create new restore points even after the others were deleted. It's just that unless fixed, the restore points from Windows 7 will keep getting deleted each time your startup XP.

The difference is that XP is not able to properly handle them with Windows 7, but Windows 7 is able to with XP. It's some sort of compatibility issue.

I guess I could take the risk and hope nothing happens with the W7 before a restore point has been made. I'll have to see how many of my old programs won't work in W7.

I suppose I could make a ghosting image or something first. (I'll have to look into that - the last time I tried it didn't go very well.)

Just to reaffirm the restore point thing both of my XP drives are blinded to my W7. I discovered this thread a couple of years back after severe frustration looking for restore points. No problems since. And a belated thank you to Brink.
