XP Mode application not showing in 7 menu

I have just installed an old program in XP Mode that I can run once XP Mode virtual PC is started without any problems. The install put an icon in the Start menu of XP and on the virtual desktop.

I understood that I would be able to start the application from within 7 even if the virtual PC was not started. I thought there should be an icon in the 7 Start menu - All programs - Windows virtual PC - Windows XP Mode Applications that, once clicked, would start the virtual PC and the application if it wasn't running. There is no shortcut icon.

Is it possible to create one? I would copy an existing one and modify it but it is quit cryptic.

The shortcut to the only other application in XP mode (McAfee) is:-

%SystemRoot%\system32\rundll32.exe %SystemRoot%\system32\VMCPropertyHandler.dll,LaunchVMSal "Windows XP Mode" "||dc8d19a" "McAfee SecurityCenter"

It's the "||dc8d19a" bit that would need some translation.

Any ideas?

I think you still have to start up XP mode then put it into sleep mode. Then you can run the application.

That's what I remember from the instructional video anyways.

That's not how I understood the way it works. This is the section from the tutorial here.


11. Installing a Program in Virtual Windows XP -
NOTE: You would install a program in Virtual Windows XP just like you would in Windows 7 with the same access to everything in Windows 7. For example, hard drives, DVD drives, USB drives, Windows 7 folders and files, etc.....

A) After you have installed any program in Virtual Windows XP, you will notice that there will now be a shortcut to it also in the Windows 7 Start Menu. (See screenshot below)
NOTE: Double clicking on the shortcut in the Windows 7 Start Menu will open and run the program in Windows XP Mode. You can now move or copy this Windows XP Mode program shortcut where you like in Windows 7 for easy use.

I believe that selecting an XP Mode application would start the virtual PC. That's how Citrix would work. I've just tested it with McAfee and this started the virtual PC and runs the application in a 'seamless window' i.e. no virtual desktop. My problem is that I don't have a shortcut for my application.

You're right I just tested it out, but it takes just about the same amount of time and memory needed to actually start XP mode. (Might as well just start XP mode) Why don't you try copying the program shortcut from your XP programs menu and then paste it over in your Win7 programs menu?

Tried that but then 7 thinks it's a local installation and can't find the executable.

Note that only applications installed for ALL USERS in the virtual XP environment will show up under win 7 start menu. If your application does not show up, try copying/moving the required items for your application from c:\documents and settings\XPMUser\startmenu\programs to c:\documents and settings\all users\startmenu\programs (in the XP environment), this worked for me.

Thanks this worked great for me. I had one application that wouldn't show up in Windows 7.
