xp mode question

Before I have Windows 7 Home Basic then after I upgraded it to Windows 7 Home Premium. I have downloaded the windows xp mode by indicating that I have Windows 7 ultimate in the microsoft website. It installed fine and running well, but my question is did I violate something? because they said Window 7 Home Premium does not have this software.

Yes, you are in breech of your license to run windows XP mode - this is a licensed copy of Windows XP which is included only in the pro Enterprise and Ultimate SKU's.

It is possible that this will cease to work at any time that windows performs a license check - the overall effect of this may be limited to the xp mode but may possibly cause your whole system to fail validity checks.

Virtual PC works also in Home Premium, so you can install Virtual PC and using your own XP install media, create a XP virtual machine. XPMode should not even work on Home Premium.

@Nigel: Professional, too, not only Ultimate and Enterprise.

How did you even download it? I am running Windows 7 HP and went to Microsoft website to try to download it and I couldn't even do it. It does a check on your system to make sure you have one of the SKU's available for XP Mode.

I just went to the website of Microsoft and then dowloaded the setup by selecting Windows 7 ultimate. But now I have uninstalled it, don't want to make trouble.

You really can't get in trouble for that, despite being against the EULA, Microsoft would never bother to hunt down people that do that.

Anyway, if you continued to run it, the worst that could happen is an update suddenly stopping Xp Mode from running. Even that seems unlikely. Virtual PC 7 is supported under 7 Home Premium.

The issue here is not that of a license for the visualization software,which is available free for running on Win7 Home Premium, but for the actual copy of XP. Am not sure if this would cause an issue now with validation, but may well do in the future, as the validation technology matures

XP Mode checks the OS version in the beginning of installation, so I don't really get it how it's possible to install it to Home Premium in the first place.

Perhaps there is a glitch with the Anytime Upgrade that causes this to slip through the crack?
