XP mode start menu population problem

I have a problem, where only applications that I install are automatically published in the 7 start menu. I cannot manually put a shortcut into All users\start menu\Programs - if I do it just doesn't appear as a published app. The exception is IE, which works if I make a shortcut.

Anyone have an idea why this happens, from what I have read you should be able to do that. Is there a way to force app publishing?

That is the same question I was about to ask. I even went to the registry and started to poke around to no avail. It would be nice to get standalone / portable apps to run in XPM

Yes it is odd - IE and Outlook Express (!) work no problem, but media player, RDP, other stuff I put in there does not. It makes the whole thing rather useless of only well behaved apps that you have installed actually appear.

I agree sense The reason I even troubled with XPM was that I have a few older apps that will not run on any thing later than XP. and guess what they are just a standalone .exe. and wont show in the W7 start menu.

On your host machine, navigate to c:\users\Username\appdata\roaming\microsoft\windows\start menu\programs\windows virtual pc\windows xp mode applications. This is where your XPMode menus are. Create a shortcut in the VM and paste it out here.

Open the shortcut properties, place quotes around your target (such as "C:\Superapp\app.exe") then prefix it with %SystemRoot%\system32\rundll32.exe %SystemRoot%\system32\VMCPropertyHandler.dll,LaunchVMSal "Windows XP Mode" "||9efe0e9d" which is as copied from the shortcuts Office 2002 made when I installed it.

Yeah it takes a few steps but it works!

I am having the same issue with the shortcuts.

The above post does work. I successfully placed a XPMode Remote Desktop shortcut in the Win 7 WinXp Mode Virtual Apps folder but still get the "This application cannot be run in virtual mode" notification.

Any other ideas or do we have to open XPMode to actually use some of the legacy apps?

For example for RDP delete mstsc.exe key from this location. Reboot the VM and you will now see RDP in a Accessories folder under the XP Mode Applications Folder in the Windows 7 start panel.

FYI ... this reg setting is within the XP mode virtual machine (not in the Windows 7 registry)

I did this but when I launch the icon from W7 start menu it's starting other application from virtual machine than I set to the target... please help
