Hey guys,

I am trying to get a networking issue between Windows 7 Ultimate 64 bit and Windows XP Pro resolved.

Here goes..

So I use advanced sharing in Windows XP and I am sharing one folder. I removed the "everyone" permission and added my current user name to the permissions list. I give this user full control. Now when I try to access this from Windows 7, it gives a permission error and I cannot get in. The folder shows up fine on Win 7 and I can ping machines back and forth. This is not a firewall problem for sure.

For testing purposes I removed the user in the permissions list on the XP share and I added "everyone." Then I go back to the Windows 7 pc to try and access the share and BAM... it works. Opens in a rapid fashion and all is well.

BUT. This is not secure. I want to be able to only allow certain users. When I remove the "everyone" permission and only add the current account name on the XP machine, I am making the share password protected. My xp machine has a user account that needs a password. When I access XP shares from other XP machines, it asks for a user and password to login. Ever since I brought one Windows 7 machine into the network, it gives me a permission error. I want Windows 7 to pop up the same dialogue box that wants a user name and password to access. I also should not need to have my XP and 7 windows have the same user name password.

Windows XP was a breeze.

Basically I want this: Make the shares on the XP machine to be password protected (everyone permission fully removed). So when I want to access it from the 7 machine, it will ask for the username and pass. (just like xp to xp machines do)

I have read far and wide but never found something this specific.

Let's get this forum fired up and get security to the forefront:D.

I apologize to you for not responding to your post 9 hours ago. I was sleeping then.

Even now, though I do not think we can help you here. You say: "I also should not need to have my XP and 7 windows have the same user name password." and "(just like xp to xp machines do)".

There is nothing we can do to make Windows 7 into XP. They are not the same, they are not designed the same, they do not work the same. Since you are unwilling to use Windows 7 the way it was designed to be used, the only workable solution I can think of is for you to stay with XP?

Cheers!
Robert

For your particular problem you need to create a seperate User account "New User Group" on the Windows 7 machine in order share with only that particular user. The new User name needs to appear on the "Share with" list, you can't just add the name to the list. Otherwise you can only share with Everyone or Nobody.

You will also need to go into the Advance Sharing Options and set it to use password protected sharing on the Window 7 machine. I have no idea if this is what you want. As Tom suggested, if you don't like Win 7 stick with XP.

The link below explains the process in more detail. It's a pain I agree, I'm not the one who invented this Op system or I certainly would have came up with a better way. ;)

Just to weigh in here, I agree with Isseu. Can I suggest that you read the warning on this tutorial: http://www.sevenforums.com/779715-post1.html It will explain why it is so difficult to do what you are trying to do
