Hi,

What is the difference between the student XP x64 and the OEM XP x64?

As for the piracy issue, notice how I'm not asking for product keys or ISO downloads so mods please don't delete this thread.

The reason I'm asking is because my sister will be starting college soon and I could buy her a normal version but I read that the student version is a "special" version that's offered for way cheaper to students only so I might wait longer and let her buy it from School for cheaper instead. She doesn't like Vista and she needs the 64-bit version because it supports more memory for her photoshop and media apps.

So I'm curious as to what is the main difference between the two? Is there a temporary activation or an expiration date where the windows stops working because it's the student version?

or should I just buy her this oem version instead?

Newegg.com - Microsoft Windows XP Professional SP2C 64-bit for System Builders - Operating Systems

Please respond if you can answer my questions.

Thanks!

No timebombs. OEM tied to one machine. Student tied to academic activities. Student license survives graduation.

Dollar for dollar, OEM is not really that good of a deal. MS will sell her Win7 for $20 or $30 with a valid edu email address. See 741.com

With activation key and everything? Will it be limited somehow in function wise because it's the student version?

You can't go wrong with the student version. I would out for Win 7 instead of XP.

And, Welcome to Seven Forums.

In the future if you need help with anything then please fill in your systems specs in the "CP" section. Happy computing.
