XP-style quick launch shortcuts

Is there any way to make the quick launch shortcuts, the ones right next to the "Start" button on the taskbar, act the way they did in XP? For example, if I launch any program that I have a shortcut to on the quick launch menu, such as Firefox, the shortcut is replaced by the "button" for the windows that is opened. I want the shortcut to remain as is and for the "button" for the newly-opened windows to appear to the right of the quick launch buttons the way it did in XP.
