Also, understand that there is no MS-supported in-place "upgrade" from XP to Win7. It is a fresh install and will not allow you to carry over your current applications.

Laplink makes a piece of software that WILL allow you to do this, but I've not used it, and in-place upgrades are generally NOT recommended because they leave a lot of junk lying around.

According to Microsoft, these are the absolute minimum system requirements:

Windows 7 system requirements - Microsoft Windows

But keep in mind that Microsoft seems to have a history of low-balling system specs in the hopes of selling more product. Even if you have minimum specs, 7 will run a LOT better if you double everything. In fact, some of the 7 features like Aero, etc may not even work properly with minimum specs.

Before I installed Win 7, I had Pentium 4, 3.0 Ghz with one GB of ram. I added ram to 4 GB. Click here to find out exactly what you need with the Windows Advisor.
Windows 7 Upgrade Advisor - Download - Microsoft Windows As was said before you will need more free space to install Win 7 and it needs to be a Clean Install.

10GB is not sufficient for W7

I would not recommend 10 gigs of Disk space for OS only, not even for Windows XP. Windows has a habit of putting, by default a lot on the system drive, which also includes User settings and Temp files, which grow exponentially with internet based programs. This is also including the fact that other programs tend to use the default user profile location, which is in the \users\<account> location a lot, which means more bloat over time that 10 gigs will get overwhelmed fast, and that is presuming you install apps on another drive location.
