Mostwanted Welcome to SevenForums What kind of printer? Sounds like a driver problem. Did you search the web site of the printer and download vista drivers for your seven install?

I have to install the drivers on 7? I should've tried that... erm.. I didn't try bc on XP even though it didn't provide vista drivers it says if needed it would support the shared pc in someway by providing the drivers for it. But I'll get back to you when dl the drivers for vista

similar problem

i have an XP computer (c1) with an installed HP 7650 printer.
i have another XP computer (c2) in a different room.
bother are set to share files, and i set c2 to use c1's printer, it installed the drivers from the host computer and prints stuff no problem
installed win7 on c2 and it easily finds networked computers and can retrieve files from the folders i set to share on c1. i attempt to set c2 to use the printer on c1, it says it can not find the drivers for the printer on the network. it asks if i want to locate them myself, i download the drivers from hp's site, which is an executable and even ran it. i retry the process, get the same prompt to search for the drivers, and the driver search is only allowing '.inf' files.
i've tried manually changing the name of the network that win7 is on to 'WORKGROUP' which is the network name i set up with xp. but that did not help. i guess i could try to physically connect the printer with c2, but i'm wanting to get rid of any potential network problem

edit: nvm, think i found solution in http://www.sevenforums.com/network-internet/7527-networking-printer-attached-win-xp-pc-win-7-a.html

Hi Mods
Maybe you can make this a sticky -- often comes up and I posted a solution yesterday which works.

Hi there
I've posted on this before but to share Printers attached to XP computers with either X-64 or X-32 versions of W7 is SIMPLE. These instructions are for the Printer attached to the XP machine (but works in reverse as well).

("Stand alone" Network printers can be done slightly similarly BTW).

assume the computers are call XPMACHINE and W7MACHINE.

1) Ensure Printer on XP machine is shared - assume it's called SHAREDPRINTER.

2) On the Network Browsing on your W7 machine ensure you can "See" the Printer share.

Now on the W7 machine do the following (doesn't matter if it's X-86 or x-64).

3) Control Panel==> add LOCAL (Yes LOCAL) printer. I know it's on a Network but hold your horses -- what we are actually doing is "Poodlefaking" the W7 machine into thinking it's running the printer.

4) Create NEW port==>Local port

5) Portname is \\XPMACHINE\SHAREDPRINTER

6) Now W7 will load a driver and you'll be able to print on the XP machine.

Simple

(For a "Network stand alone printer") at 4) chose TCPIP port
and at 5) enter the IP address.

If the printer is on the W7 machine and you want to print on the XP machine then do the same instructions on the XP machine --
port name in this case will be \\W7MACHINE\SHAREDPRINTER

Cheers

Windows 7 network printing

Hi,
I used your suggested method for network printing and it worked. Has Microsoft been advised of this very serious problem.
Hopefully they will fix this soon.
Another problem is that System 7 is missing many printer driver definitions. XP has many many more.
When I attempted to add more drivers the System took forever and then nothing happened.

I'm also can't seem to get my girlfriends Vista 32 laptop to share my Brother MFC665CW, it shared no problem on my Vista x64 install.

When connecting from her computer it now says "Printer driver issue" in a pop-up box, so I suppose that would be on my end?

Also, is it just me or is the Win7 Networking interface a bit counter-intuitive at first?

Did you follow my instructions completely -- her computer shouldn't say ANYTHING about printer driver issue -- at step 6 the computer will install a driver on HER computer the first time. Your machine and the printer need to be switched on of course.

Shared Printer Problem..!

I have HP LaserJet 4240/4250/4350 Series Printer, attached with Windows XP SP2 and shared and i am on windows 7. while i am sharing the printer from XP to 7, i followed the below steps:

Opened Devices and Priners==>Add a Printer==>Select Add Printer Prom Network=was searching for printer win7 and it deteched and then i click next button= here two steps: 1) says connecting to the (printername) and 2) installating driver==>
after this give me message that "Access is Dined"
firewall was disabled. in both OS and printer is shared okay..i try with another XP os. it work great with another XP OS but Win 7 the problem is as below.

and when i followed the above steps in win 7 to add printer from Network.. and when i click on Add a Printer Button in "Devices and Printers" then it give a message for second time as" windows Can't Add Printer. the local print spooler is not running. please restart spooler or machine."

everytime i restart both printer and my os machine and same message is appears.

Note: when i installed the win7 last week the problem was same. but on that day once it attached successfully and i printed some of my documents too. but after that, last day i wanted to printe my documents, i face the same problem.

Please anyone to solve my Problem.
thank you

the below message appears when i done the above steps.

Thank you Jimbo45 for your perfect instructions. I have a Canon iP6700D connected to my Win7 64bit computer. Needed to share with an XP computer. Followed your instructions. Downloaded drivers wouldn't load but the Canon installation disk worked when I chose the new local port.

The final version of Windows 7 had better address this issue. It definitely isn't intuitive, at least until you know how to do it.

Thanks, Jimbo. This had me going. It's a pity sharing a printer has been made this damned hard.

I can't get my (XP only) Epson Stylus Photo 900 to print from Virtual PC. I've created a simple Notepad doc, press File>print,my 900 comes up as the default printer. I then select Print, the status monitor is visible, the blue progress bar works but the ink display shows no ink even thow they are full. No response from the printer and 0 docs in the queue. Printer works as expected with my laptop. My goal is to use this printer through Virtual PC in Windows 7. Any help would be appreciated.

Windows 7 to Xp and Vista?

Ok so I am slightly retarded when it comes to printer and network sharing i need to be told exactly how to do this. I have the printer installed on my Windows 7 PC. I want to share it with a Vista Laptop, Vista PC, Windows 7 Laptop, and an XP PC. If someone would be willing to help me that would be awesome! Step by step instructions would be fabulous. I have homegroup on my 7 pc and i thought it was not backwards compatible for other Os's? Pls Help!

Vista to Win7 print share still a problem

jimbo 45,
Almost excellent solution to the problem.

I have 2 laptops connecting to a desktop running W7. My work laptop, runnig Xp has connected now with no problems - so brilliant.

BUT, my own laptop running Vista is proving to be more of a challenge. When I try to enter the new port details (\\newoffice\MP610) it tells me "access denied".

If I try to connect the right way (that does not work) it certainly connects and trys to locate drivers - but of course fails. I can see the printer through the network page no problem. I have also tried the alternative route, loading the printer as a local printer on LPT1 then just trying to change the path. I get exactly the same "Access Denied" message when changing the path.

I am running Norton 360 security and I have set both machines to Full Trust ( although the Xp machine only needs share level and it works no problem).

Any more thoughts?
