XP to Win 7 - Partitions Not Being Recognised!

Just having a browse now, but it does not say/mention if you hit the problem i have! Just moves on to the next step assuming everything is ok! LOL

Right, i thought i would make a post from scratch so if there is anyone reading they can give me pointers, and maybe Ken can point me in the right direction!

Right, so i downloaded the ISO image from Microsoft and burnt it onto a DVD. I then used GParted to make a 50GB partition on my 149GB internal HD. Once that was done and formated to NTFS (i think!) i went back into windows xp and made sure it was parted properly. I then made sure it was active, primary and clicked onto my computer and it had its own icon so i knew it was there, as per picture on Page 1! I then rebooted the PC with the Win 7 DVD installed. In then booted from it so i tapped space to stat the process. Once inside the Install screens i click to create a fresh start with Win 7 and delete all previous versions on the PC, aka FRESH INSTALL! Once it gets to the part of where to instal is where i hit the problems. It says iut does not recognise the partition i have made. Nor does it recognice the current XP on my other Internal HD, says unrecognised format! So, with the partition i have made, i use Win 7 to format, delete and create a new partition. Again, win 7 says it cvannot find the partition even tho it just created it! Then i'm stuck!

What to do! I have downloaded both the 64 and 32 bit files, both do the same!

Go into Bios and change first boot HD to the HD you want to install 7 on.

Then use the pop up boot menu ( it is one time only ) to boot from the dvd.

When you start the pc you should see something like

F2 for setup ( that will take you to bios)
F11 for boot menu ( that will bring up the pop up boot menu)

Your F numbers may be different.

Arrow down to cdrom drive - put the dvd in the drive - press enter.

See if that does it.

Otherwise:

Take the side off the case and unplug the cable that runs from the HD 0 to the mobo.

I was having the same problem, it would not install no matter what i tried. I went into the BIOS and mine was under "Advanced BIOS Features" then "Hard Disk Boot Priority" and moved the hard drive that I was trying to install on to the top. It worked perfectly. Maybe this will work for you NickW...

WOWSERS guys, BIOS Option and moved the HD i was installing to to the top and its work. YAYYYYYYYYYYYY, thanks for all the help guys.

I gave up, thats why i did not come on. Sweet, hope it installs well!

Boot partition

The Windows 7 installer has specific needs for its boot partition, and it needs to be on the disk the system is booting to. Remove all partitions from the disk you want to install win7 onto, set that as the first hard drive in the bios and boot the CD. When you reach the point where it asks where to install, select the disk and click new. You'll get a message about win7 making additional partitions as necessary. It creates a 100mb "system reserved" partition to hold boot files.
