Solved XP User denied access across network

I have a very simple network with just 2 laptops, one running Windows 7 and the other XP.

The XP computer has one user and no password. The Win7 has 2 users, one with a password and one with no password.

I have done all the right things to make Win7 files visible across the network but every time I try to access files from the XP, I am prompted to login.

If I login as User1 with a password, I gain access to Win7 files. If I login as User2 without a password, I get the 'Denied Access' message box.

Is there any way around this, apart from always being User1 ?

Thank you for the link, seavixen32. This was what I used as my guide to setting the network up.

I have double-checked and I don't seem to have missed any steps.

What is still puzzling me is why I am being forced to login across the network and also why that login only works for one username and not the other.

This is just a guess. Is the log in name/password on the 7 PC the primary/admin account? If so, I'm betting that's the issue. To check this, remove the password and then check, a reboot maybe needed.

Have you checked if the password protected sharing is enabled on Seven? If yes, you need an account with password to access network shares.

Yeah, I have that problem as well. Whenever it prompts you to log in, you have to use the account with the password to get in. As Kari said, if you don't want to log in through a password, you'll need to change the Advanced Sharing settings on the 7 computer.

re. the above comments.

1. Yes, the primary account (which works) is password protected.

I am reluctant to remeove the password from that account because that is the one that I can use to gain network access from XP. It is the other one (not password protected that fails).

2. I have definotely done all the things recommended i relation to turning off password protected network access.

This is the nub of my problem. Why does XP come with a password screen, when I try to access a Win7 folder, and why does this allow my win7 password-protected username to get through but 'Access Denied' to my Win7 non-password username ?

I know I can always use the account name that works but this defeats the whole object of having one account for me and one for my wife.

Only thing I can say is this is exactly the kind of behavior when Seven has pasword protected sharing on.

I finally have a result ( of sorts . . )

Despite checking, double-checking and checking again, I cannot find anywhere else in Win7 that I have missed but my XP laptop still insists on a login screen before it will open a Win7 folder.

I have therefore given both of my Win7 users a password and everything now works fine.

Does this mean that Win7 has changed its rules and it is now impossible to gain access to a folder, across the network, without login ?

Or have I just got a dud version ?

Why didn't I listen to BassFisher6522 !:o

That was the solution all the while.

Just for the record, if you want seamless sharing between Windows 7 and XP, just remove ALL passwords from Windows 7 accounts. Then set the sharing rules as suggested and , bingo, it all works, painlessly and seamlessly.

I hope this helps anyone else who has the same problem. Closing the thread as 'Resolved@
