XP>Win7 - Would like to keep my toshiba software

I got a toshiba laptop from a friends, and would like to keep some of the "gadget" software that comes with the laptop, however, the software is on the Recovery disc. Is there a way to transfer it from xp to win 7

Most likely? Not! The problem there is unless you can browse the disk itself for separate installation files/folders and everything isn't simply zipped up in self contained archived files for restoration purposes only no go.

For compatibility issues with the newer version of Windows you face another problem there as well since those were more then likely written specifically for XP making the compatibility mode options and troubleshoot compatibility tool obsolete. But if you find separate executables you can still try but be advised this is all prepackaged softwares by Toshiba there.

Hi. Toshiba may have what you want.

The best guess for any updated version of the extras would be looking at the support site for applications and utilities for that model that are at least Vista compatible if none of them are labled for 7. That sounds a bit more like programmable hot keys with Toshiba having their own updates for that.

Check the Support Downloads webpage for your model on Toshiba's website.

You can also try Googling the exact Device name which you want as listed in the Device manager + driver, or + software.

The only tutorial I've seen to strip individual apps out of the Recovery disks is for HP, but maybe it can be adapted if you study it: http://www.sevenforums.com/installa...are-after-clean-win-7-install.html#post488270

There are always some trade-offs in a clean reinstall to overcome factory bloatware corruption, but that should not dissuade one from doing it as the net gain is a computer that is better than new.

When I went from vista to win7 on my toshiba laptop I created the recovery disks
just in case, it created the operating system on disk one thru three and disk 4
had all of the toshiba applications. Hope this helps you......

The set of recovery disks if made from the recovery partition for that model would be for XP not Vista or 7 posing a problem. This is why the suggestion to going to the Toshiba support site was made as a last ditch hope of finding the updated versions of the softwares if available separately there.

That's another thing that may become a problem as well as since prepacked wares generally are not seen as separate downloads. They are provided specifically for the custom packages provided with the preinstall. If you do end up burning a set of XP recovery disks that may be the only way to extract the XP versions to see if those will still run on 7. Support pages for laptops are generally a little awwww.... "limited" at best.
