xp & windows 7 dual boot

A friend of mine made a dual boot system on my laptop. The problem is it loads windows 7 without going to the boot manager screen to allow me to choose which one i want. My laptop came with xp and it shows that the hard drive has been split. And it also doesn't have the recovery in the laptop.
Any ideas? thanks
