Thanks for the answers Mikinho and Orbital Shark. Ill wait for the guys at Microsoft to sort out their stuff.
So the RTM (dont know what this stands for, thats how much of a noob I am!) will be released on the 13th July? Will it still be free like the RC1?'

thanks guys,

Degs

No it wont, RTM stands for Release To Manufacturer which means that it is the final release given to manufacturers to use on their systems, they then add all their own BLOATWARE apps and re-release with new systems as OEM. The public release of this will be on October 22nd where it will be on shelves in several retailers for you to buy.
   Note
There will be no more public/free download releases

To add a little to what Orbital Shark mentioned when a product goes RTM Microsoft usually (there are exceptions) also releases it to MSDN Developer (me) and TechNet subscribers to use in development and test environments. The delay in RTM and a public release is primarily for OEM partners and software developers to finalize their product compatibility prior to public release.

It's a bug in 7MC that causes deleted movies to appear because of the cache files, although deleteing the cache does not help either.

The best way around it is to remove the folders from 7MC by removing the added library folders. Then re-setup the library with the same folder & you should find that previously deleted files are now gone, at least it did for me on several occasions.

Hope this helps :)

Jeff

yea, this is a pain in the ass tho, and cant believe more focus hasnt gone into 7MC.... but, i have the same gripe about Homegroups as well, to which in many ways, they are "connected"... if these two things were fixed and perfected, i actually might think of paying double what MS is asking for. Until that, i dont feel as tho they have earned my $$ overall with this OS. I have resorted to basically using it as "XP" in many ways, especially in sharing of files on the network, instead of using Homegroup. If there was an alternative to MC, i would find that refreshing.

Hi Digger,

Homegroups basically works using the same hacks that many of us have used on previous Windows platforms but keeps the password sync'd for us and gives a little extra features. From my friends at Microsoft I believe a lot of the bugs in workgroups and specifically Libraries have been resolved in RTM. Luckily we won't have to wait long to find out.

In terms of Media Center, I'm sure you know there are quite a few alternatives and I test them regularly. SageTV, MythTV, Media Portal, XMBC, Boxee to name a few. I keep coming back to Media Center for 3 reasons: 1- Their UI is the nicest IMHO; 2- I have Media Center Extenders already; 3- Eventhough limiting I prefer their programming model over any of the others, well aside from XMBC.

My biggest compliants with MC7 is 1- No Softsled. Some made progress in this field before but received a CnD; 2- No DVD or Blu-ray streaming for MCXs. I've put in work-arounds. Most of my other compliants I've been able to make plugins for, most of which I'm starting to clean up and will publish.

I keep XMBC and Boxee on HTPC and my laptops but the WAF isn't anywhere near the level Media Center is. Media Portal was too buggy for me but w/ the AEON Skin looks amazing for a few days but then I feel like it is too kiddy . SageTV easily has the most features and is kept relatively cutting edge but their UI needs work IMHO. I also don't like their programming model and I don't want to drop the extra money on their extenders for a product I'm not 100% confident on.

I'm hoping MC7 brings attention back to Media Center and allows Microsoft to put focus back on it. My current plans are to replace all my MCXs with Ion based systems capable of Blu-ray playback. Since I have HDHomeRuns I'll have Live TV, native DVD and Blu-ray and MAME.

Hi mikinho.

New to the YAMMM forum, and it looks a really good app, but I have a question.

Why do the video files have to be in their own folder ??

The reason I ask, is that in another room, I have an Archos TV+ (could be any media extender I suppose) connected which uses UPnP to access the video files on my PC downstairs.

If the video files are in their own folder, then it's gonna cause 1 extra navigation step to access the film. Not a big issue, just something to remember.

I'll give it a go tonight when I get home, but don't want to mess up my current folder structure too much.

The ION based systems are pretty cool - I have just purchased a ASRock ION 330 to be my HTPC, and have been looking at XBMC as well as WMC, which is how I came across your app.

I didn't get the BD version as it was a bit pricey - might get a replacement BD player when the prices come down a bit.

When will the next YAMMM release be ??

How's the knee ?? How did you do it ??

CBers.

Hi CBers,

The primary reason I designed the program to work with folders is to be consistent between all movie formats regardless if it is UDF (DVD, DVD-HD or Blu-ray), single movie files or spanning movie files.

My secondary reason was limitations of the OS. Even though NTFS can handle an extremely large number of files per folder as the number increases you'll see performance problems. The exact numbers vary significantly per hardware but when developing server products a good practice has been between 10,000 to 20,000.

I can look at making it an option though if you'd like. My only challenge would be filtering out trailers, samples and if sequels were named identical aside from a 1 or 2 characters then it would group them together. That or just turn off grouping\playlists if this option was enabled.

Btw, Let me know how your ION system works out. I don't have the funds at the moment but I'd like to replace my media center extenders with ION\Atom based systems as well.

And the knee isn't doing to well. Dislocated it playing basketball. I have to wait a few days for the swelling to go down before doing a MRI. I just hope I didn't rip my ACL. In high school I tore my ACL, PCL, MCL and meniscus in my right knee. This time it is my left knee. It doesn't feel as bad but no good either.

yea, i understand, but.... With HG it shares with the whole HG itself and anyone on it. I would like for everyone to be on a HG, but have different elevated access privs for each user/pc per folder/library share. That cant happen. This would be very useful in the home and at work.

At work, say for instance... you have production/inventory, accounting, payroll, maintenance, warranty service/repair, marketing HR/PR, and then managment/boss.

I would want the boss to see everything from everyone, but no reason for any dept to see payroll except for HR/PR and boss/management. Accounting needs to correspond back and forth with production inventory (outgoing ships) and warranty service repair (incoming ships). And so on..... Currently the ole option is to have domain and public drives, but that can be tedious, and has the extra job of cleanup after lazy ppl not updating or deleting files, making it all one big mess at times, not too mention everyone has access that is on the domain. Basically my gripe is that MS hasnt re-engineered the workplace or home netoworking experience. I dont feel as they are using its full potential of what could and can be accomplished with HG while incorporating the use of libraries. I've yet to play around with server to see how it acts with HG's and so on. I have, however, noticed this idea somewhat implemented in the WHS, which confuses me again and again why only WHS.

This is sort of the same problem within the home. Its either all or nothing with HG. Casey at the bat...... no joy in mudville - mighty casey has struck out

:p

Hi again mikinho.

Let me have a play and see what effect, if any, it has.

May be an issue for other members of the family, but we'll learn to live with it.

An option I did think, was if there is a known limit, then perhaps for SMALL set-ups ( < 15000 files) then all can be maintained in the same folder, but for LARGE set-ups (> 15000 files) then seperate folders are required.

WRT the ION/Atom, I'm still ascertaining which is the best "media center" set up for me.

I have a mix of SD/HD with and without AC3/AAC encoding, so I need to have a MC set-up that caters for all.

I like the original WMC but it won't plat AC3/AAC, whereas XBMC does.

So confusing, so little time to play :sarc:

Hope the knees sorts itself out - I've had a dodgy knee for almost 25 years so I know what it's like

Right, off to play with YAMMM (did you ever come across YAMJ for the PCHs ??).

OK, so I used YAMMM last night and the presentation in MCE needs a bit of tweaking WRT the "posters" etc., but at least I could read up on the film etc.

The only problem I have is not YAMMM related, but more to do with WMC/WMP as it does not play AC3/AAC.

XBMC will play AC3/AAC and it also does the movie info etc.

So, I am torn between them at the moment.

XBMC does AC3/AAC, but does not play HD content very well under windows as it does not use hardware accelerator for video, whereas under Linux, it uses VDPAU and works fine.

If you have any further suggestions that helps me to stick with WMC, please let me know, as I don't really want to put Linux on my ION (I have enough problems working with unix at work every day  ).

What makes you say that MC doesn't support AC3/AAC? On mine it does. Using the integrated sound device it wouldn't but I did some research and found which cards it worked with and haven't had a problem since.

Well if it does, it doesn't send the signal to my surround system to say it is playing AC3/AAC like XBMC/GOM Player/VLC Player etc. do.

Any suggestions ??

Well if it does, it doesn't send the signal to my surround system to say it is playing AC3/AAC like XBMC/GOM Player/VLC Player etc. do.

Any suggestions ??

Are you using the default codecs and decoders or ffdshow?

Have you tried AC3Filter?

Just out of curiosity have you set your sound hardware to 'output' digital audio & not the default analog? I may be wrong as sound cards aren't my thing, although my onboard has the option of 'Analog' & 'SP-Dif/Digital'

Yes, I have AC3filter installed, along with "CoreAVC 1.95 full edition", "HAALI Media Splitter" and "DivX Tech Preview: MKV on Windows 7"

I haven't got ffdshow installed though, should I ??

As I said, I know other media players (GOM Player, XBMC) are passing the signal, as the display on my receiver changed to either DTS of DOLBY B, so why isn't MC ??

Yep, cos it works with other media players.

Have you setup Media Center to use any of the 3rd party codecs\decoders? By default Media Center will use it's own unless changed, installing them is not enough.

See Preferred DirectShow Filters Tool for Windows 7

And since you mention CoreAVC I take it you are uisng W7 32-bit?

Yes. Any significance in your statement/question ??

I just wanted to verify as CoreAVC is not x64 compatible yet and AC3Filter wasn't until 1.60b. If you were running 64-bit I was going to ask what version you had.
