So I am getting really frustrated at this issue, iirc my last computer (Windows 7 Home Premium) had EXACTLY the same issue as this computer does which is also running the same OS. As usual the headset is working but the microphone is not, using front jack and my settings are like this. I have been searching Google all day but still no success. Setup microphone asks if my mic is muted, it hasn't got an on/off button and I think everything is unmuted.

EDIT
If I use an xbox controller with the headset then that works but it is far too quiet. My headset is Logitech h110, no drivers needed.

What I have noticed is that if I'm listening to music through the headset I can see the microphone bar in the sound mixer moving ever so slightly?

Two things I see, whether they will make a difference? First, you should set the Stereo Mix as the default recording device. Then whatever recording device is used will be heard, and you need stereo mix if you ever want to record audio from the internet.

Second, 16 bit, 44.1 KHz is the "CD" standard and what you should be using. The 48Khz is only used for video. I have a recording studio and only record 44.1Khz (I record 24 bit but when a recording is mixed down, its mixed as the standard 16 bit, 44.1Khz).
