yet another wake-on-lan thread

I've searched and searched, and tried all sorts of suggestions, but I can't seem to prevent Windows 7 from turning off my NIC when I shut down. Quick summary:

+ wake-on-lan is enabled in BIOS (Asus Rampage III Formula - I have both wake-on-lan from s5 and the two wake from PCI/PCIE options turned on)
+ wake-on-lan is enabled in network adapter driver (onboard Intel 82567V-2 - wake on magic packet and wake on magic packet from power off both enabled)
+ network adapter driver is up to date
+ have tested with machine running, and magic packets *are* getting through

When I turn the computer off with the power button while *not* in windows (for instance, during boot), everything works as it should: NIC light stays on, system wakes on magic packet.

However, when I shut down from within Windows 7, the NIC light goes out & system is unresponsive to magic packets.

I'm almost positive I had this working previously... but haven't used it in a long time. How can I force windows to leave the NIC powered when shutting down?

UPDATE: I've just confirmed that WOL from Sleep doesn't work for me under Win7 either. Again, the machine goes into the proper state, but the NIC light goes out.

the 'wake-on-lan' function is intended to function when a computer is in 'standby' or hibernate' mode---it will NOT function when the machine is powered off

In device manager, find your network adapter, highlight and right click and select properties, then in the new window select power management and see what boxes are ticked and what's not. I believe that's what your looking for.

@tman69 - Thanks for the response. However, my machine does, in fact, wake from a powered-off state, as long as it was not shut down through windows. (Please see my message above.)

Also, the NIC driver and the BIOS both specifically have options for wake-on-lan from a powered off state (S5).

So I'm confused by your reply, because it definitely is possible & in fact frequently done (I've done it myself with previous machines). The problem here is that the *NIC* (as opposed to the system itself) is being powered down by windows, rather than being left in the wake-on-lan low-power state. Perhaps that's what you were referring to? If so, then yes - I've identified that as the problem. The NIC light should be on when the system is powered down, but when I shut down via windows, the light goes out.

@bassfisher6522 - Thanks for the reply. Unfortunately, I've already enabled the appropriate power management options in the NIC properties.

On my NIC, there are four options: wake on directed packet, wake on lan, wake on lan from power off, and wake on link. I've tried all of them, in various combinations. Nothing seems to prevent windows from shutting down my NIC when I power off.
