Seven out of 10 young employees frequently ignore IT policies, and one in four is a victim of identity theft before the age of 30, according to a global study from Cisco (NASDAQ: CSCO) announced today. The final set of findings from the three-part Cisco Connected World Technology Report reveals startling attitudes toward IT policies and growing security threats posed by the next generation of employees entering the workforce -- a demographic that grew up with the Internet and has an increasingly on-demand lifestyle that mixes personal and business activity in the workplace.

The Cisco Connected World Technology Report is an international study that examines the next generation of workers' demands and behavior involving network access, mobile device freedom, social media, and work lifestyles. The findings are key in explaining how this next-generation workforce's behavior heightens personal and corporate risk amid a complex threat landscape, a correlation that is spotlighted in more depth in the Cisco 2011 Annual Security Report, also issued today.

The latest findings from the Cisco Connected World Technology Report reveal growing concerns for employers. The desire for on-demand access to information is so ingrained in the incoming generation of employees that many young professionals take extreme measures to access the Internet, even if it compromises their company or their own security. Such behavior includes secretly using neighbors' wireless connections, sitting in front of businesses to access free Wi-Fi networks, and borrowing other people's devices without supervision.

However getting back to what the OP was on about :

Most decent companies I've ever worked for have a sort of "Public wifi" that's totally free and un-restricted and 100 % NOT connected to the corporate network. You can only use this with YOUR OWN laptops.

Using a corporate laptop you go through the normal company system whatever their policies are.

If companies introduce these type of p[olicies 99% of the problems are FIXED. _- However it's usually a question of POLITICS rather than technology -- and sometimes I.T staff aren't always innocent of this at all --I;ve met some I.T admins who would be perfectly at home working for some local authorities clamping Cars for a 15 sec "tempoarary stop" etc etc.

(Most I.T admins usually have a difficult job however balancing system security / availability with what management respecifies and what users want (or need).

Unfortunately What users "Want" and what users "Need", are usually totally different things, and any good system admin will concentrate on providing the facilities they need to perform the tasks the company are paying the users to perform.

If a user wishes to surf the net for private purposes then they should do this in the own time, If there is surplus bandwidth available for personal use then OK, make this available only outside working times.

How many of us have ended up waiting in a shop or bar because the staff are on their personal cell phone, this is an example of what happens when personal technology is allowed in the workplace, I for one am not happy to wait for the staff to arrange their social life.

The best system I have seen in the workplace is for the management to to prohibit all personal hardware, but actually provide computers with open net access in the staff recreation areas, (staff room / Canteen), which let users access the net but only when they are, (Visibly), not working

"Real jobs" and ladies underwear aside, the allowance of recreation on the company network (minus p2p abuse, etc.) is a good thing. It costs the company no more (most have a flat internet fee), and could build worker morale. This idea of squeezing every drop of work from every worker is preposterous in this day and age. I am an advocate of working hard when you're at work. At the same time, working hard should bring "downtime"... Right?
