Probably not as amazing as many other systems. No offense, but Sony isn't known for their sound/speakers. Even the Sony reps I've dealt with have told me that, and they work on commission lol. Then again some people are incapable of really noticing the differences between higher quality systems. My wife for example can't tell differences between HDTV sets. I can tell ones that are blurry, not bright enough, etc...Apparently she can't

Ditto. I also use a Sony 5.1 HTIB and whilst it would make an audiophile scoff, for me it does the job.

Obviously I'd like better, but replacing it is currently very low on the list ;)

Yeah audiophile I'm not. Hence the XFi and for speakers my long serving Cambridge Soundworks 2.1 set. I did pick up a Medusa 5.1 Headset though for gaming with Vent and they're amazing... if a little shoddy. I'm on my second set. They only seem to last like 12-18 months.

I doubt I'll ever convert to spending a couple of hundred on a sound card and getting ridiculous.1 speaker system. For one I hate all the wires and most of the time I use a computer in silence or I'm on a game. One of the drawbacks of having the PC in the living room. The missus hates it when her latest whodunnit is overridden by KABOOM!!! in the background.... unreasonable sod!

for gaming i use an ancient cambridge soundworks 5.1 desktop theatre set that i purchased back in the last millennium - if only the rest of my hardware from that time was still useful! they are very handy for fps gaming as i can position the small speakers accurately around and over my monitor (and behind me) so i can quickly tell where enemies' gunshots are coming from, whilst hiding the subwoofer away somewhere discretely. i also have the volume control velcroed to my keyboard for convenient access. :geek:

for music and films, i switch on my marantz hi-fi amp with big floor-standing speakers. due to the layout of my room, they aren't very good positionally for gaming, but they produce a much better sound for enjoying music.

I never have it loud, it's more for the quality of sound it creates. Hifi speakers sound alot different to me and as I have some top speakers there's no need to buy new smaller (but expensive if they are to sound anywhere near right) hifi speakers. :)
