Hi all

I just want to get some info from all you experts out there on two of the system security programs I use which are advanced system care pro and kaspersky anti virus.

I'm pretty confident that kaspersky works well but I'm a little worried about ASCP since I read somewhere that it can actually do more harm than good if not used properly. I upgrade to the pro version from the free version and it has many many settings, some of which don't make a lot of sense to me (meaning that I don't really know how they work).

Any feedback would be much appreciated. Thanks!

PS - I also use spybot and ad aware, but not as much as the other two.

Purely from a BSOD perspective Kaspersky is better avoided.
Microsoft Security Essentials is generally recommended as suitable for Win 7.

I would also suggest you forget about Advanced system Care Pro.

Generic advice -
If you do not have knowledge of the registry, then you would probably be better off leaving it alone, and definitely not placing blind trust in a program to do the job for you.

To advise anyone that a "Registry Cleaner" works, and that it will fix or speed up their machine {or all the other nonsense that is often propagated about these things} can mislead people.

Should you decide to go ahead -
Make sure you have
1. a current System Restore point created.
2. a recent "Back up" of your computer- preferably to an external HD.

Any time someone uses a disc cleanup tool, optimizer, registry cleaner, etc it's not a question of if something bad will happen, but when. Windows 7 is not like previous operating systems because it doesn't really need a bunch of cleaning and tweaking. It's pretty good in maintaining itself right out of the box. If cleaning or optimizing is needed, the built in Windows 7 tools like disk cleanup, defrag, etc do a good job.

If someone decides to use a program like Advanced System Care, I would strongly recommend making regular system images "just in case". If ASC has real-time antimalware scanning (don't use the product so I don't know if it does have real-time scanning) I'd turn it off. Two real-time antimalware scans running at the same time could cause conflicts and slow a machine down or at worst, cause it to crash. That's why an up-to-date system image is always a good thing,

Hi there
In all the years I've been using computers I've never needed a Registry cleaner or anything like that.

These days too I'd JUNK ANY 3rd party A/V software -- MSE is fine for W7 (and in W8 - the next release it is merged into Windows Defender. If you've tried W8 consumer preview then the Windows defender app is just like the MSE in W7 for running scans etc.).

There may well be a back port of this combined functionality to W7 too - but in any case the development stage of MSE is that it's just as good (or bad depending on your point of view) as all the rest -- but MUCH MUCH lighter on resources. Also A/V virus definition updates are more regular too than with standard A/V software - and can be delivered via standard Windows Update.

I think the days for Non Corporate 3rd party A/V software are well and truly over now -- just download MSE and forget the rest.

Cheers
jimbo

Anytime you use a program to clean the registry, remember, this is a program not made by MS & mistakes can happen. It's too easy for the program to take out a vital reg key & hose your system.

Recently, PC World (I believe it was them...knew I should have bookmarked that page...) ran a series of tests on the effectiveness of registry cleaners and the "increase in speed" claims.

Yes, they can speed up your PC at boot times, however, that "speed increase" is usually 1 or 2 seconds at best. I wouldn't think that a 1 to 2 second increase in boot time is worth the risk.

I never knew about MSE. This is total news to me. I have been using kasperky for years so I'll wait till my subscription with them ends. As for ASCP...UNINSTALL!

Thanks for all your feedback guys, much appreciated!
