Solved Your Win 7 is NOT genuine + no motherboard for you?

We have 2x Win 7 desktops at home. Both 100 percent genuine. And again both my Win 7 CDs are genuine.

All day my wife has appeared to have no net access yet in desperation we selected win7 updates. They miraculously downloaded & installed then came the dreaded Your copy is not genuine.

Grabbed a spare HDD & the motherboard won't even initiate. Just a nasty lonely little blinking cursor

Has MS "genuine" done this or just a co-incidence?

Yes of course. We are two senior citizens. Not kids. We & our PCs live bland lives.

I have plugged in a new HDD blank + Win 7 CD rom. The PC gets to the MB welcome screen PRESS F12 to select boot device ----- then nothing but a blinking cursor. No MB intialization proceedure one is used to seeing. nothing. Why did u ask that 'accusing' question? Has MS done this via their own incompetence?

Can you identify for us if your Win7 discs are OEM or Retail?
"OEM" is usually written on the packaging of the disc or on the booklet that comes with it.

The CD case says Win 7 Home Prem OEM software.

I'm perfectly certain there is no "accusation" involved in my previous question and anything after that.

These are deductive questions I ask to easily isolate the issue. If answered accordingly, people will get a better hold of your current issue and come up with a solution.

OEMs are restricted to the PC they were first activated on. For example, if you use your OEM Win7 and activated it on PC 1, it "binds" to PC 1. Is the licence used by the problematic PC been activated somewhere else beforehand?

(We have to clear the common culprit issues first.)

No. nothing like that happened. It was a functioning PC until this morning. Malware can be the only culprit. (my guess). But my wife isn't aware of anything she "did" & I haven't a clue. But wrong CD / wrong Key is not on the list.

I recall the NOT genuine notice mentioned build 7001. That's an odd no. Mine from memory is about 7601. 7001 seems too old. And her PC is younger than mine.

That number does seem strange, an original Win 7 install will be build 7600 changing to 7601 after SP1 has been installed.

Regards the blinking cursor it sounds like you are trying to boot from the blank HDD and not the DVD drive which is what you will need to do if you are trying to install a new copy of Win 7 onto the blank HDD

You can change the boot order in the bios to read DVD first before HDD or there is normally an F key you can press on startup to give you a one time boot menu that will let you select to boot from Win disk

I get Mr. blinky after i go F12 & select HDD or CD-ROM. Both fail. Do i need to go into net bios & not just pick something to boot from screen?

To be clear though, "Young PC" or "Old PC" does not have any bearing with your OS build. It will get the build you decide to install it with.

As Pauly have mentioned, you must change your boot priority via your BIOS so it's not booting from the empty HDD. Can you make these changes?

Hooray. Its OK. I was using a generic plug for the DVD & not the one assigned to it. I''m reformatting. now!!

I think your gonna run into the same problem with the new Motherboard
ITS ID is the primary validation check, and if your key is OEM then you will get the non genuine message.

As your specs show custom build then the W7 disks you have should be labelled
System builder OEM or Retail
OEM is purely for factory built comps.

Going forward, please add full OS images to your twice-weekly routine. If nonGenuine-ness ever is from malware, a restore will be the fastest way to solve a malware-caused nonGenuine messge.
