A periodic imaging of my C:/ drive failed to write on one usb back up drive.
I opened device manager and it said "Windows has stopped this device because it has reported problems. (Code 43)"
Googling this didn't prove very informative.

The drive is from Zaapa
I've seen some diagnostic programs around, seagate western digital and the like. Will these diagnostic programs work with this Zaapa (taiwan) drive?

both scandisk and cmd -> chkdsk /r stopped working at pass 4 of 5.
Is this drive dying or dead?
Any suggestions what I can do? Data recovery isn't important as I have more than one backup copy :geek:

Thanks all.

The disk looks like a worry - especially for storing images.
You can try Seatools but also CrystalDiskInfo should give you some useful SMART information.

Thanks for the links. As expected, it's saying CAUTION on one of the tests, and now just after I ran it, the HD has started buzzing. I've emailed tech support at Zaapa, am waiting for a case number to send it off. THis is a replacement drive for my original Zaapa dog that died one month out of standard one year guarantee. Looks like it's days are numbered.
