Zanzarah:The Hidden Portal does not work in Windows 7

in Windows 7 - character gets stuck and can't be moved at the very beginning of the game - can't get out of the kitchen without freezing up.
Anybody get this game to work?
Using Windows 7 32 bit.
I've found that Vista had much better compatibility with everything than Windows 7.

Yes, I've tried many combinations of compatibility mode and found the game in a list of incompatible with Windows 7 in a Google search.
Was just hoping someone had found a workaround.
