Unidentified Networks - Set as Private or Public

How to Set Unidentified Networks to be a Private or Public Network Location

   Information
Sometimes Windows 7 is unable to identify the network it is connected to due to a network issue or lack of identifiable characteristics. This type of network is called a unidentified network.

A network location identifies the type of network that a computer is connected to and automatically sets the appropriate firewall settings for that location. This will show you how to set a unidentified network to always be set as a private (work) or public network location as displayed in the Network and Sharing Center.
   Note

  • Choose Private network (Work) for small office or other workplace networks. Network discovery, which allows you to see other computers and devices on a network and allows other network users to see your computer, is on by default, but you can't create or join a homegroup.
    • All computers are peers; no computer has control over another computer.
    • Each computer has a set of user accounts. To log on to any computer in the workgroup, you must have an account on that computer.
    • There are typically no more than twenty computers.
    • A workgroup is not protected by a password.
    • All computers must be on the same local network or subnet.
  • Choose Public network for networks in public places (such as coffee shops or airports). This location is designed to keep your computer from being visible to other computers around you and to help protect your computer from any malicious software from the Internet. HomeGroup is not available on public networks, and network discovery is turned off. You should also choose this option if you're connected directly to the Internet without using a router, or if you have a mobile broadband connection.
   Warning
You will only be able to do this while logged in as an administrator.

4. Click on Save, and save the .reg file to the desktop.

5. Right click the downloaded .reg file and click on Merge.

6. Click on Run, Yes, Yes, and OK when prompted.

7. Open the Network and Sharing Center to see the change.

Why is it we overlook the simple things and end up getting into some complicated deep rooted experimental solutions hahaha

I would have never of thought to refresh the driver but then again when i go to hardware and devices and you see a yellow some times it is always good to delete it and refresh it and it will reinstall perfectly fine

incase anyone gets stuck(like me!)HOW TO UNMERGE NETWORKS

1) At " Network and Sharing Center " click on the network icon, at the popped up window click on " Merge or delete network location" . There you should see your network's status as "in use". Leave that window opened.
2) Go to " Network and Sharing Center" -> "Change Adapter Settings". Disable all the network adapters that are joined into your network.
3) Switch back to the " Merge or delete network location" window. Now your network's status should be displayed as "Not in use" (and when selecting that network delete button is active). Delete the network.
4) Now you can enable the network adapters that you've disabled in step 2 and it should guide you through creating new networks for each network adapter.

I am using Windows 7 Home Premium and I am connecting back into my home network via VPN. I have used the registry hack at the start of this thread to turn unidentified networks into "Work networks". My network access type still shows "No Network Access" and I can't access anything on my local network. What I want to do is to be able to access my files and browse network shares as if I was at home. I have network discovery turned on.

Any ideas?

I am just supplying my connection to the laptop thro , my modem wlan, and it gets connected with authenticated password. But the lan adopter shows, but it is having a red x mark. why please brink, can i expect your favour of quick reply to the both queries.

Hello jraju, :)

I'm not sure why it changed to public like that for you. You might also check using the tutorial below to make sure that your network profiles are set to private as well.

http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/43629-network-location-set-home-work-public-network.html

The local area network adapter is for Ethernet, and would only automatically be used instead of your wireless when you have an Ethernet cable connected to the laptop for Internet instead.

Hi, Brink ,
i have scanned the laptop with avast and it says vulnerability of Rom 0 sector of the router and asked me to resolve that .It says resolved the issue. I do not know what it did . After that it has become auto public. I am having home group network. What is private network? Should i select that instead of home group. Or it is a sub group Home group. How to go about it. I also read about your article on the how to set private network by going to local policy settings.
Would you please elaborate, how it is safe to set to private? The terminology confusion is there ,home network , private network. Does it mean individual access different from family members access.
Why it cannot auto detects the connection.Pl give details or the links.

The second part of the answer clarified , why Lan is disabled in the laptop. Thanks

You would want to set your network type to be "private" since it's required to join a homegroup.

The rest of your questions should be asked and continued in your other thread since they are not related to this tutorial.

If this is not a PC used on public networks (ex: hotspots), then it would be safe to set it to "private" to be able to have better access with computers on your home network.
