Windows 7: Disappointed in XP Mode :(

Disappointed in XP Mode :(

I'm disappointed in XP Mode because it refuses to run several programs which previously operated without a hitch in XP Professional.

Windows Virtual PC installed without problem and, thereafter, FireFox v 3.6 and PCTools v 2010 installed, call-up and run fine. Others, e.g. Palm Pilot v 4.1, Sony Image Transfer v 1.5 and Edios Hitman, Blood Money, to name three, install but refuse to call-up in XP Mode.

I'm hopeful that this is not an XP Mode host OS deficiency but, rather, only a matter of minor tweaking (BIOS?).

Any help very much appreciated

Mitch

You need to understand that XP Mode is merely a VM that runs through a RDP interface. 3D games will NOT work. USB might work through a VM directly but it will NOT work through RDP. Things like your clipboard and printers will.

If you are not familiar with RDP, it is used for Remote Desktop sessions.

ALL hardware intensive software on XP-Mode will either not work or VERY poorly. There are no graphical acceleration (aka 3D acceleration). There is also no audio acceleration (audio software will LAG). Thus, XP Mode is for PROFESSIONAL only. Hence why it was not offered on Home Premium.

What I would suggest is to either try installing the games on Windows 7 directly. If they doesn't work for some reason, I suggest dual-booting with XP, which I think is not needed because most game games will work natively on Windows 7.

Dual Booting with XP - Help, Please

[QUOTE=What I would suggest is to either try installing the games on Windows 7 directly. If they doesn't work for some reason, I suggest dual-booting with XP, which I think is not needed because most game games will work natively on Windows 7.[/QUOTE]

Edios Hitman, Blood Money worked briefly but some features became buggy so I uninstalled - a subsequent reinstall = zip. The Sony and Palm programs are USB/Synch dependent and won't work in either XP Mode or W7. I don't know what "dual-booting" is and am willing to try it with guidance.

As to XP Mode, what good is it if it won't run older XP proprietary programs (the game part requiring audio/video acceleration, etc. I now understand)? Fortunately, I DO have an XP PRO OS laptop still in service that I can use if necessary (except games)

Thanks!

Mitch

Dual-booting is the process of installing 2 operating systems on one computer and often on a single hard drive. When you boot up your computer, you have the the choice of operating systems you would like to start.

Here is a dual-boot guide to Windows 7 and Windows XP. I recommend reading up on it before deciding it's the route you want to go.

Ah ... this looks like this is a good way to compromise a 98% capable W7 system merely for the sake of convenience. I'll continue to use my Dell Inspiron 9400 XP Pro OS laptop as needed.

Thanks!

You aren't understanding the limitation of VMs nor Remote Desktop. That is what XP Mode is in a nutshell. If you thought it was some magical utility that would run software just as if it were actually running on your desktop then you thought wrong.

As pointed out, it is mainly for professional use (corporate/enterprise) for applications that will only run on Windows XP. Corporations need clipboard, file saving and print functionality out of that and that is what they get through the RDP interface that the XPM process runs.

I have the Palm Desktop 4.1.4 installed and working without a hitch. I do have to initiate the sync from the Palm before it will sync up.
Use QuickInstall in the Palm Desktop and have it waiting to sync and then press the sync button on the Palm, then it syncs right up. The Palm doesn't show up until that time though. I transfer my geocaching files this way.

Very disappointed with Win7 Core i7 DVD playback.
I have a Thinkpad W510. 8 GB RAM, running Win7 Pro 64-bit. My previous laptop was a Thinkpad T61 with 32-bit XP and 3 GB RAM. DVD playback on that machine was flawless, I could set up a DVD for the kids and never have to worry about it. There were no lags, no hiccups, no pauses. Playback on...

IE9 not impressed..slightly disappointed.
more of a random ramble about my hatred for IE9 here. I'm not thoroughly happy with IE9 at all. there are several annoying quirks about it that get on my nerves. none of these were present with IE8. 1. often in forums I have to click on things 2 times to get a response. 2. often pages will...

Anyone else kind of disappointed?
I really wish MS would've added new featured from the RC to RTM timeframe. A lot of icons are left unchanged from Vista's, plus the taskbar could've been reworked a lot.

Disappointed, satisfied? Thoughts about RTM...
Now that most of you are running the 7600.16385 (RTM), what are your thoughts on what is basically the finished version of Windows 7. After the past 6 months or more of progressing builds on the new OS, are you satisfied with the final product? Are you disappointed? Was there anything not in...
