Problem child
Have downloaded SP1 onto my own two machines no problems.
Now please bear with me as it does need some background.
A friend (who doesn't have a great deal of disposable income) has bought a second hand NEC Versa for one of his children for school that I can see was originally loaded with Vista and then either upgraded or formatted and loaded with 7 Home Premium.
He asked me (he is not savvy at all - not that I am much myself but...) if I could put a disk in to scan for a virus which they thought was stopping them from opening IE. However I accessed it with no difficulty using the dongle and my own router access.
On closer inspection I found no security on this machine except for Defender - however the firewall was not enabled. So I promptly put on MSE and enabled the firewall for him as it was open to all - for starters. Have done all the dffinitions for MSE and scanned - nothing found.
I checked the Windows updates and found the usual Defender and 7 for x64 systems updates, and that the SP1 and Windows Essentials were ready to go.
The SP1 was attempted 5 times and all failed giving an error WindowsUpdate FFFFFFFE & WindowsUpdate_dt000.
I went through the troubleshooter and eventually it said "fixed" only to find that the download still failed.
Now I even tried adding some ready Boost as there is just 2Gb RAM internally to see if that made any difference but no go.
Machine has an Intel Pentium dual core T2330 @ 1.6Ghz 120Gb HDD 2Gb RAM an HL-DT-ST DVDRAM ATA optical and not a great deal of apps / programs on it.
It's reasonably slow by todays stuff but acceptable.
I have probably left out some details that may be needed to sort this out so please let me know what they are.
But this problem with the SP1 for 7 is beyond me / us so any help / advice / solutions would be so appreciated.
